Something different this week, where I take an overview of all the clients in the fediverse ecosystem and which ones stand out to me. There are a huge amount of great clients and apps for the fediverse available, so I'm giving an overview of the clients I pay the most attention to.
New: Fediverse Report #125 - This week's #fediverse news:
- @Mastodon's 4.4 update brings more customisation, as well as the option to set referral headers to show that people indeed click on links - Continued uncertainty around the UK's Online Safety Act, with Mastodon.social saying they "are still aligning on a way forward for people in the UK" - new features and updates for PieFed - @fedicon will be August 1-2 in Vancouver!
- Bluesky adds age verification system to comply with new UK law - Eurosky is a new initiative from to build a commons content moderation system in the EU - Bluesky aims to be the place for US soccer conversations
Bluesky and Mastodon users have drastically different perceptions to the UK's new age verification laws: either treating their platform is exactly the same as a Big Tech platform, or assuming their network is so different the laws dont apply
- More notification settings for Bluesky - How atproto is becoming a place to build multiperson LLM chatbots - Bluesky's proposal for Auth Scopes also introduces new questions for governance
Alternative social networks like the fediverse and Bluesky have constructed a narrative of how growth of the network happens: when Musk does something particularly evil or stupid, people migrate in a wave looking for an ethical alternative. But what happens when that pattern breaks down?
I look at how this narrative came to be, how it reflects a specific time period, and how this period might just be over now
Fediverse Report #123 - this week's #fediverse news:
- Tumblr will not migrate to WordPress, and resulting from that, will not be joining the fediverse after all - @Mastodon makes the release candidate for update 4.4 available, which among other features will display quote posts from other platforms - new funding round from @nlnet with grants for better event federation, #activitypub -based polls on WordPress, and for NodeBB and Funkwhale

- Zeppelin is a new full-network appview, allowing you to use the Bluesky network without Bluesky PBC's infrastructure - @roomy.chat shows the alignment and struggles of combining atproto with local-first computing - combining atproto with OpenID Connect
- The publishing schedule stays exactly the same. Tuesdays is Fediverse Report, Thursday is Bluesky/ATmosphere Report, Friday is an essay and personal takes for email subscribes. - Because you all love RSS: https://connectedplaces.online/feed/ - You can follow the blog via activitypub: @laurenshof@connectedplaces.online - Ill cross post to fediversereport.com for a while still, still figuring out the moving account on wordpress stuff
The weekly Fediverse Report doesnt disappear though, its just on a different domain name. In fact, Fediverse Report #122 is right here!
This week's news: - @Mastodon announces and retracts a new ToS for their instances - Threads moves their fediverse integration to a separate feed - Wanderer is a new fediverse platform for sharing your hiking and biking trails
As the open social web grows, my writing has expanded to cover the large variety of places within this connected network of platforms. Fundamentally I think the open social web are Connected Places. The platforms, instances and communities we're building are digital places, connected via open protocols.
- @activitypub.blog talks about how they plan to make WordPress sites a full member of the fediverse, with replies, follows, and your own feed - @fediforum videos now available, with some thoughts on the ones that stood out to me - server admins can now opt-in to @fed.brid.gy on a per-server basis - @swf releases draft for E2EE messaging over #activitypub with MLS
- media is doing discourse on how bluesky is dying, while JD Vance joins the platform - Blacksky creates new type of moderation relay, aggregation all moderation actions by all labelers on the network - bsky.storage allows users to backup their account and create recovery keys, giving users access to their account even when their host is offline
How we understand the new open social networks, like the fediverse and the ATmosphere, is continually changing. With new tools like @anewsocial Bounce, which allows you to port your social graph between atproto and activitypub, it changes again
A quiet week as the hype announcements are waiting for this week's @fediforum . You can catch me on Thursday on Fediforum with a session on whats new on the open social web!
In other news: - A @peertube AMA on Lemmy, and the first milestone of their fundraising for their app reached - The @swf publishes #activitypub Web Components
New: Taking Control of Your Timeline - in Different Ways
#Fediverse platforms as well as #Bluesky offer to give the user control of their timeline - in contrast with the control that Big Tech Platforms have with their algorithmic timelines.
But the approach is surprisingly different: fediverse platforms like Mastodon give you control over *how* you see the content you follow, whereas Bluesky gives you control over *what* content you see
Fediverse Report #116 - This week's #fediverse news:
- @fediforum will be June 5-7 with a new advisory board - updates from @bonfire on their upcoming platform - A new fediverse onboarding tool by @fedidb - Fediverse music sharing platform Bandwagon talks about their plans for financial sustainability
