hi, we're #FriendlyElec, and we put all our OS image downloads on fucking Google Drive, which blows our quota by dawn, and if you didn't get your download in before then, fuck you. lol! #Chinesium
another request for work came in, but this time it's a bug hunt (in the sense of the line from Aliens) with no clear path forward defined at all, I think I need a joint to deal with this
@sun interesting that even with years in on this network existing, it's really not immediately obvious how to build something very much like it but cleaner.
@sun I haven't been able to keep as close an eye on its development as I'd like, despite wanting to build apps on it. I seem to recall there being some glaring unsolved problems with it even apart from the problem of having to convince every implementor to support a new object type.
@sun yeah, I established a toehold due to its censorship-resistant properties, but it's mostly bitcoin maxis posting affirmations and talking about eating nothing but steak. I'm probably gonna keep poking around over there though.
@sun hm, I set up a Mumble instance on Debian a while back and it worked. would be ironic if being forced to use Ubuntu meant you ended up with a broken Mumble package
@TerryHancock there are many different types of walkies which work on many different bands.
CB is AM or SSB; the Baofengs are FM, so they don't talk to CB. but, in the USA they can talk to ham VHF, not-quite-legally to GMRS (with a $35 license which covers your entire family for 10 years), and illegally to MURS, FRS, FM business radios, and marine VHF.
in practice, nobody gives a shit that people use the Baofengs on bands they aren't certified for as long as you're polite.

@jeffcliff@sun my main issue is that I've been stuck for 8 years in environments which suppress my mind's ability to contain that level of complexity, I used to be a bona-fydee software engineer and have a degree in CS (undergrad, but still)
but, I still try to help where I can. currently focusing on helping ne'er-do-wells like me get a leg up. feel free to hit me up whenever, worst I can say is no
@sun I want to make software and/or web apps so bad, and I haven't written a lick of code beyond sub-50-line shell scripts in years :(
for me it's a cognitive chicken-and-egg, I'm not able to work on such tasks in small increments until I've been working on them every day for a long time and thus the context is still fresh, and I can't re-bootstrap into the dev headspace without either a partner for "body doubling," or long blocks of alone time living someplace where I control my sensory input
small-time fedi trainwreck personality & long-abiding fedi development attempter. been here since 2017 and haven't accomplished a damn thing besides making friends :)I used to work in 9-5 software engineering but found it wasn't for me, and then life took me on a ride. I'm still on that ride, and now trying to reboot as an indie developer.Pet project #1: @fediseedsPet project #2: @surfhosting
