    beyond the whole thing about it being like email having basically nothing to do with the UX it's also something that's just going to be confusing to the vast majority of people you try explaining it to. people don't know or care about how email works under the hood and they don't realize it's even possible to run your own email or have different email hosts. as far as the average person - the kind of person who actually needs fedi explained to them to understand - is concerned, email is just gmail and hotmail and some businesses have their own email names. you pick gmail or hotmail (or i guess outlook now) and that's it, those are the two options. all of the things about email that people try using as reference points to explain fedi are things that people dont even know about (or just dont care about) email. the only sort of person that analogy would actually work on is the sort of person who doesn't need it, because the people who actually care about that shit with email probably don't need fedi explained to them. if you've found the unicorn who selfhosts his email but is struggling to understand fedi, sure, go ahead and use that analogy, he's the one in a million it'll actually help for.

    bf's mom really does not seem to understand the concept of a food allergy. no matter how many times I tell her "if I eat shrimp or anything with shrimp in it I will die" she seems to interpret it as "I just don't like the taste of shrimp".

    I fuck up a lot of words personally, because I read a lot but grew up in a hick town, leading me to learn a lot of words through text rather than hearing them. Stuff like that is pretty common. As people become more and more online, with less in-person interaction, it grows more common for someone to learn words in this way and go years without ever hearing it pronounced, potentially leading to the mispronunciation being ingrained as a default even after being exposed to the correct pronunciation. I still screw up the pronunciation of words I know how to pronounce casually, because I need to remind myself that it's not pronounced how my brain defaults to pronouncing it any time I verbally speak it. There are also regional dialects with different pronunciations.

    scifi species idea: species that has three sexes resulting in humans eventually adapting their third gender's behaviors as a form of nonbinary identity/presentation. the plot twist is that the alien civilization already has nontrinary identities and now some humans start identifying as nontrinary too. this leads to a space war between the nonbinary and nontrinary factions of humanity, absolute chaos, alien civilization obliterated in the crossfire. it's a metaphor for something, how we appropriate stuff I guess, let the fans figure out what it means.
