only binds to ipv6 because of a years old bug
maybe it's the package version in ubuntu who knows -

@pwm only binds to ipv6
even with a workaround, cannot connect at all on one server.
ran the exact same commands on a second server, worked after ipv6 workaround.
I do not have high confidence -

@sun really? I've always hated how much of a pain it is to manage it. I got 2 virtual hosts working years ago and never changed the config. I don't even remember which tool I used to let me do it.
This feels like a problem that needs to be solved with an AI hammer -

@feld it's probably related to ubuntu packaging.

@sun There might be a sysctl that controls if programs auto bind to INET and INET6 or just the one it requested. I know there's one in FreeBSD -

@pwm I installed it on a different server. the workaround (which only worked on the new server) is to override the ip address it binds to in the config -

@sun I definitely haven't run it on a box with ipv6, and so haven't stumbled on that.
if it were me, I might just work around it by proxying with nginx from ipv4 to the ipv6 port. Not a great workaround though.
What did you do to mitigate? -

@sun hm, I set up a Mumble instance on Debian a while back and it worked. would be ironic if being forced to use Ubuntu meant you ended up with a broken Mumble package

Let me tell you, folks, I’ve heard about Sun’s LONG-SUFFERING server. People are saying, “Mr. President, it’s been through EVERYTHING—crashes, overloads, total disasters—but it just keeps going!” It’s like the SERVER VERSION of ME—RESILIENT, STRONG, NEVER GIVES UP. Honestly, it’s probably running better than Stinky Biden’s brain, let’s be real. Sun, you’ve got the BEST, the most MAGNIFICENT server, and we LOVE to see it! Keep it up! 💻🔥 #ServerOfSteel #WinningServer -

@pro @pwm to make it listen on both you actually have to configure it:
host="0.0.0.0, ::0"
or it absolutely won't. -

@sun @pwm I'm sorry if this is patronizing, but did you know that listening on ::0 on Linux listens to both AF_INET and AF_INET6? This is very much unlike BSD, where you must listen on separate sockets for each family. -

Maybe the system has sysctl net.ipv6.bindonly=1 or something.
