the more I see these well-scrubbed comfortable people with little to no precarity in their lives excitedly collaborating on ActivityPub development, the more I become concerned for the future of the network (and more importantly me and my friends' ability to use it in peace).

now my concern could absolutely be unfounded, and I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I'll just again point out that the supposed founder of IFTAS is somebody whose bio link on that site points to LinkedIn instead of anywhere running ActivityPub, and that people broadly similar to him are increasingly taking it upon themselves to define how this place operates.

in short, I have an uncomfortable feeling that some of this work, if implemented, is going to have a rather unsurprising emergent property of reinforcing in-groups composed of people very much like themselves.

@silverpill @jody_racer @mkljczk thanks, this is the second person I've heard say something like this.

I'm running a single-user Akkoma instance right now but considering whether to use it or Pleroma for a "close friends only" one. which is why I asked about Mitra moderation features like a year ago lol (I ran into many tribulations between then & now)

@silverpill @jody_racer @mkljczk anything I should know about the state of Akkoma and/or Pleroma development? I'm still waffling over what softwares to use for various projects.

@sun @anemone ah, was wondering if private repos were how you beat the scrapers. I have been very very very lucky in not having had to tangle much with them yet.

@sun @anemone I'm currently running Forgejo but seeing as I have almost nothing on it, I may be tempted to switch

    TIL that #Betterbird exists:

    https://www.betterbird.eu/

gonna give it a try. after all, I'm moving away from Firefox, it doesn't really make sense to stick with other Mozilla products as they've shown their disinterest in software quality, preferring instead to ship useless features nobody wants and chase endless side quests which have nothing to do with shipping good software.

and then it forgets the sort order. every time.

unreal. it's 2026, for fuck's sake. this basic functionality should be sorted.

man, #Thunderbird really has become absolute ass. like maybe I'm a decade or more late to realizing this because I didn't use it so long, but the UX is absolutely atrocious. how many fucking times does it need to download the same set of messages in the same folder???

@silverpill @phnt my experience with the non-chronological ordering is on Akkoma with RUM indexes enabled. but on the Mastodon instance I'm posting from, if I search for something extremely common like "food" and click Posts, I can scroll down to a max of 20 results.

@silverpill @phnt the reason I'm asking is I'm trying to decide which platform software to use on my single-user news & politics instance which currently runs Akkoma.

I can live with not-great search on my other alts, but for that one I want good search because frequently I'll see a news story I want to boost or discuss, but I search for stories from other outlets which are better written or the posts better formatted.

being limited to 20 results with no ability to order makes this difficult.

@silverpill it returns a maximum of 20 semi-random recentish posts which can't be sorted

can anyone comment on how good, or not good, search (for posts) is between self-hosted fedi platform apps good for single-user servers, such as #Snac2, #Mitra, #GoToSocial, #Bonfire, etc?

I am looking for search which is actually usable by someone who wishes to find things and perhaps sort what's found, unlike that provided by e.g. Mastodon, Akkoma, etc.
