It's poetic in a way, since the reason for our gun laws was bootleggers.

And not because of crimes with guns they committed, but because criminalizing the weapons they used meant they could be charged for that if they didn't have evidence of actual bootlegging.

From the National Firearms Act: Hearings on H.R. 9066 Before the H. Comm. on Ways and Means, 73rd Congress 1934, by A.G. Homer Stille Cummings;
“I do not expect criminals to comply with this law; I do not expect the under-world to be going around giving their fingerprints and getting permits to carry these weapons, but I want to be in a position … to convict [them] because [they have] not complied.”
"A sawed-off shotgun is one of the most dangerous and deadly weapons. A machine gun, of course, ought never to be in the hands of any private individual. There is not the slightest excuse for it, not the least in the world, and we must, if we are going to be successful in this effort to suppress crime in America, take these machine guns out of the hands of the criminal class.”

@Escoffier @sickburnbro Posting the interview some of them had with Jocko, including one of the men who helped raise the holiday colors. The intel people on board were all killed in the torpedo hit, ~30 men, who sealed themselves in and refused to open up.

It was surely a spy ship, not that the crew were wholly in the know ("research" vessel), but attacking any ship that is a non-combatant is a war crime, and the flag overrides all else.
