The US might do something silly like trying to bomb Pickaxe Mountain with B1 Lancers tonight. -

I don't think Iran has the capabilities to down a B2, but imagine if they somehow nailed one. It'd be like when Serbia downed a Nighthawk during the Kosovo War but a thousand times worse. -

@MCMLXVIIOTG @Chzikken_1486 @Sovereign They always put on a good show. I got to see one up close a few years ago. A crew chief opened up a panel and hydraulic fluid streamed out of it.

I heard the Blackbird leaked like crazy on the tarmac because the design required tolerances for heat expansion at supersonic cruise. Maybe they had to do something similar with the B1? -

I'm not much of a military hardware autist—so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong—but as I understand it the ability to track a target requires lower positional certainty than an actual target lock. -

@Chzikken_1486 @Hoss @MCMLXVIIOTG @Sovereign The SR-71 leaked on purpose because the metal panels expanded due to air friction at supersonic speeds. Hoss Delgado likes this. -

Was it really official operational procedure for Blackbird pilots to simply throw the afterburners and outrun any SAM that locked onto them, or was that an urban legend? -

@Hoss @MCMLXVIIOTG @Sovereign @Chzikken_1486 To my understanding, you can detect an aircraft easily, but getting a target lock - also known as a firing solution - requires keeping your radar focused on said aircraft. Most aircraft can only lock onto one aircraft at a time.
Your radar can easily lose track of an aircraft if it drastically drops its altitude into hilly terrain or enters an area where it is receiving protection from friendly GPS jammers.Hoss Delgado likes this. -

@Bunsen @Hoss @MCMLXVIIOTG @Sovereign @Chzikken_1486 Reminder that the way they got the F-35 was a type of IR guided missile that ran up the tailpipe. B-2's are meant to mitigate their IR signature with the design of the engines, if memory serves me right,
however radar and IR have--in general--grown past yesteryear's flying wing and engine muffling stealth.Hoss Delgado likes this. -

On the one hand, that failure state ensures your top secret supersonic aircraft stays secret by turning into expensive titanium confetti at 85,000 feet. On the other, it does the same thing to your pilots. -

@Hoss @MCMLXVIIOTG @Sovereign @lord_nougat @Chzikken_1486 If one engine went out, the other one would throw the SR-71 into a vicious spin that would rip the aircraft apart by g-forces alone. -
