It’s also extremely interwoven with Instagram, so a user can look at an Instagram verified profile and choose to slide over to their IG account in Insta in a single click. From the IG culture perspective, it’s a strong start on a Twitter replacement and it really may aim to use its IG connection to be the “big picture” revenue stream, it really may just be a way to promote IG while battering down Twitter’s ad shitification. From the perspective of what I like here though, it’s a spectator sport.

Bam (bam@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 01:20:44 JST Bam So, confession time. I actually used my insta account to check out Threads. It’s the same as what you’re talking about. There’s verified accounts for a number of companies and celebs, which, you know, has its advantages and such. And it’s very early Twitter in its interactions. There are QTs, which is interesting. And I’m not seeing embedded ads, yet. But the feed is clearly pushing corporate and celeb confirmed accounts. There is unquestionably an IG feel to it, which is a very popular platform for the mass audience.
Look, that’s a thing. And if reporters and pols follow, I wouldn’t mind seeing the ones I choose from here (so hopefully they aren’t shitty neighbors). But I can already tell that I won’t be using much there. That said, once it gets “trendings”, I do think it could be the death knell for Twitter.
But at this stage, it *feels* performative, not conversational. We shall see what happens as things progress.

Just think of it like, if you had a Twitter account and could use it to follow someone on Facebook and on Instagram and see their posts there. That’s the Fediverse. Mastodon is one platform of many that operates on a protocol called ActivityPub which makes the Fediverse work and interoperate.

Bam (bam@sfba.social)'s status on Sunday, 02-Jul-2023 10:32:25 JST Bam @ricbixter @feditips The easy answer is this. Follow people that interest you. Fill out a profile. Create a feed that you enjoy. Boost stuff you like and/or think people should also see and if you want to say “thanks for posting that” to the person who did press favorite. The rest will come in time.

You can be on gmail or hotmail or your work server but you can communicate with any other email server. Here too, I’m on sfba.social, but I can see your toots, follow you and respond to you. My sever has different admins and possibly different policies than yours, but we can communicate with one another.

Bam (bam@sfba.social)'s status on Sunday, 02-Jul-2023 10:10:11 JST Bam @ricbixter @feditips When I started, I was looking for an American server, to avoid any intercultural miscommunications as I became familiar with the platform. I didn’t want one that was ginormous and I didn’t see a decent sized server that had an interest that screamed out at me, so I picked a mid sized regional US server. I have to say that I’ve been very happy. The admin team at sfba is kind and responsive and keeps people in the loop. I’ve considered moving as some servers of my interest have popped up and grown more populated, but I am just very happy with sfba, so I haven’t moved. I don’t live in the San Fran Bay Area, but I happen to like the people on my server, so here I am.
But i follow and boost people from all over, so I actually don’t spend much time in my local timeline.

Here you can pick an instance with admins you know or trust to do what is right. And if you can’t, you can create your own and mod it for yourself. There, you don’t have any of those options.

There is an answer in my response if you want to ensure it: Run your own single-user instance.

Then, there’s your answer. Start an instance that is. Mastodon is merely the platform. Individual instances set their own policies. If one doesn’t do what you like, you can create your own and implement whatever policy you like.
And it isn’t hiding in a cave. You can federate your own instance with any other instance you choose that is willing to federate with you. That’s the beauty of decentralization.
