Hey Beth (hey_beth@sfba.social)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 01:20:06 JST Hey Beth Hey Beth

One of the things I have loved about Mastodon and the fediverse is that it changed how I use social media. On Twitter, my feed looked like everyone else's: RTs of all the same big accounts.

The big accounts aren't here. They aren't dominating conversations or our feeds. We are finding new accounts, new voices, new perspectives, and new jokes. I realize that this wisdom and wit did exist on Twitter, but it was not easily discovered.

I just popped into Bluesky. Looked at the feed of a well-known Twitter account, and all it consisted of was interactions with that exact same select few accounts.

Twitter, Bluesky, and Post are spectator social media. There are people who prefer to be spectators, and some of the big accounts do provide important information and insight. But it's not conversational in a way that includes followers.

This reminds me of how I stumbled across the account of Jason Mamoa on here.

He has on his verified Insta account more than 17 million followers.

I guess he never quite gained any traction here. Not sure if it's because he didn't really converse/interact with anyone or maybe the audience here just doesn't lean toward being star struck.

If it was the second reason, that could have been overcome by interacting with people here.

      Also... just for you Beth

So, confession time. I actually used my insta account to check out Threads. It’s the same as what you’re talking about. There’s verified accounts for a number of companies and celebs, which, you know, has its advantages and such. And it’s very early Twitter in its interactions. There are QTs, which is interesting. And I’m not seeing embedded ads, yet. But the feed is clearly pushing corporate and celeb confirmed accounts. There is unquestionably an IG feel to it, which is a very popular platform for the mass audience.

Look, that’s a thing. And if reporters and pols follow, I wouldn’t mind seeing the ones I choose from here (so hopefully they aren’t shitty neighbors). But I can already tell that I won’t be using much there. That said, once it gets “trendings”, I do think it could be the death knell for Twitter.

But at this stage, it *feels* performative, not conversational. We shall see what happens as things progress.

It’s also extremely interwoven with Instagram, so a user can look at an Instagram verified profile and choose to slide over to their IG account in Insta in a single click. From the IG culture perspective, it’s a strong start on a Twitter replacement and it really may aim to use its IG connection to be the “big picture” revenue stream, it really may just be a way to promote IG while battering down Twitter’s ad shitification. From the perspective of what I like here though, it’s a spectator sport.

The IG accounts are why it will kill Twitter. Unlike Post and Bluesky, Meta did not need to find users. It simply needs to convert its users to Threads.

@Hey_Beth @fcktheworld587 And kind of an interesting point. Much of the Twitter bitching is “BUT THEY DONT HAVE DMS”. Well, they kind of do. If you’re following an IG linked account and you’re an IG linked account, you hit their profile, tap the IG button and there’s a DM option that’s end to end encrypted. I mean, they are literally pushing people to IG as a platform with its interoperability all while creating an AP enabled conversation space. Kind of genius actually.

Some other interesting info as I’ve poked around. They are planning a following only feed. They are planning edits. They are enabling hashtags. They are using IG’s moderation policies on their instance. It sounds like they were trying to get something out, but know it isn’t a finished product. Considering the speed of Musk’s shitification, I can see why they’re striking now even without a fully developed product
