@hakan_geijer I’m not much of an OSM data user, mostly a contributor…but yes, this sounds like a task for QGIS. (JOSM is an OSM editor, and it’s not exactly meant for producing custom maps.)

One way to get large sets of data from OSM is to use extracts, e.g. as provided by GeoFabrik - https://download.geofabrik.de/

(PBF is better for programmatic use, whereas Shapefiles have support in GIS applications like QGIS.)

I recently also learned (at FOSS4G Asia) about how to load OSM’s new vector tiles as a layer in QGIS, to style certain features, and to print the results on paper.

In QGIS, go to Layer - Add Layer - Add Vector Tile Layer.

Under Source Type, select Service. Create a new connection with any name, and the URL https://vector.osm.org/shortbread_v1/{z}/{x}/{y}.mvt.

You should now have an interactive vector map. You can change how it looks by adding rules in the Layer Styling panel (Settings - Panels - Layer Styling).

Obviously, nobody is against improving free software. But the mentality of “use the best tool for the job [even if it’s proprietary]” needs to go.

@LadyNeuroFunk I use #XMPP as my primary medium of communication, be it chat or audio/video calls.

I ask non-geek contacts to install #Quicksy or #Prāv. For the more privacy-conscious, I suggest regular XMPP clients and servers. There’s also the paid hosting and self-hosting route, and unlike #Matrix it’s actually easy and economical to do.

I also wrote a user’s guide to XMPP.

Down with proprietary and centralized platforms! ✊

At the age of 18, when I started studying in art college and learning classical music, I also started dual-booting #Linux, but…found myself almost never using Windows after that.

It’s been over 12 years since then. I simply never used #Windows after that.

Damaging a working class person’s possessions is immoral, and creates enemies instead of solidarity.

As I wrote elsewhere in this thread, I hate the game, not the player. Targeting individuals destructively is neither moral nor effective.

The problems with public transport you describe exist because the world has been design for cars, for the profit of the car and oil lobbies.

(Even safety would be less of an issue if there was enough frequency and capacity to prevent overcrowding. There’s also surveillance cameras inside most buses and trains these days, although I quite hate them from a #privacy perspective.)

#FuckCars demands better public transport, not merely the abolition of cars.
