@byte @pecet @rail I want more biking and more public transport and more walkable areas. However, people are going to keep using cars when those options are dangerous, unreliable, non-existent or not usable by people with mobility issues.

I am only mildly mobility impaired, but I depend on my car to be able to get to work and shit - I am literally unable to walk to the nearest bus stop in bad weather (or on bad pain days).

When I lived in the city, the buses didn't always go where I needed to go. Or, they would have turned a 10 minute drive to a 1 hour communte (each way). I ain't got the spoons for that.

Also, when I took the bus back in the day, I experienced frequent sexual harassment on public transit (and the occasional "accidental" inappropriate touch).

Being disabled in a woman's body is double-plus ungood (for me) & I politely ask the "Fuck Cars" crowd to consider my car to be a reasonable accomodation.

@baconandcoconut @byte @pecet @rail And who make them dangerous, unreliable, nonexistent, or inaccessible?

Who makes them all that?! 😜

(Answer: cars, car companies, car-brained people, and car-brained infrastructure.)

Fuck Cars folk have also surrounded my vehicle (on bikes) during an unannounced "protest," banged on it, and ignored the fact that I was waving a handicap parking pass at them.

Between that, and some of the ableist shit I've read in their online spaces, I have a hard time believing the Fuck Card moment is actually achieving anything other than preaching to the choir.

      YMMV

@RamenCatholic @byte @pecet @baconandcoconut @rail The underlying assumption of the #FuckCars movement (or maybe it’s just me) is that there’s no reason why public transport should not be
      just as accessible,
      just as convenient,
      just as fast,
      and just as safe
      as a private vehicle.

The problems with public transport you describe exist because the world has been design for cars, for the profit of the car and oil lobbies.

(Even safety would be less of an issue if there was enough frequency and capacity to prevent overcrowding. There’s also surveillance cameras inside most buses and trains these days, although I quite hate them from a #privacy perspective.)

#FuckCars demands better public transport, not merely the abolition of cars.

We had cameras on the school bus and city buses in the 90's & I still got harassed and occasionally felt up.

      @RamenCatholic @byte @pecet @baconandcoconut @rail Damn, that’s messed up. I absolutely do not condone behaviour like that.

Damaging a working class person’s possessions is immoral, and creates enemies instead of solidarity.

As I wrote elsewhere in this thread, I hate the game, not the player. Targeting individuals destructively is neither moral nor effective.
