@whitequark Probably by never having worked with anything better. If you're a complete newbie to PCBs, you don't know what's normal, and so some really bad software can seem like 'well, it gets me PCBs, this just must be hard'.

@whitequark 100% - but most of what Indo is either old arcade gear (as in 198x and 199x) or throw away prototypes. So I can still get away with it for now.

@whitequark At this point I use leaded solder because I've still got half of a spool and don't go through it that fast. I won't buy more of course, but...I use it slow enough I might run out before it does.

@chocobo13 @inthehands 'Stakeholders' includes all the people who use and are affected by the product. They ARE the people.

@inthehands The difficult bit of course being determining what educators actually NEED, as opposed to what they are used to having because that's what they were sold previously.

@BrodieOnLinux @viq @lproven @nixCraft Not so much luck, just stupid amounts of engineer time. For as much as I tell my coworkers that RF is black magic, it's really just quite difficult engineering, that you need a lot of very expensive gear to do. And then get through the various approvals. Nothing that big bags of money and years of work won't fix.

@fesshole Yep - I had some old books on the shelf I hadn't got to, and have started finding they are too small to read. Dreadful feeling, as if I wasn't feeling old enough.

@thomasfuchs Yea, but the rest of the environment is swirling around like a freaking blender and tends to break things behind your back. You are correct, but in the real world the effect is as if software rots.

@glynmoody @cstross Given that the AIs have repeatedly been made to cough up source material, I'd say they aren't extracting patterns, but rather incorporating the original material whole hog.

@neil @dalias Is there a way for them to reach out and cause you trouble if you live in, for instance, the EU or the US, and you don't travel to the UK? I don't know how things like this work across national boundaries when the nations more or less co-operate on legal matters.

@jwz I am once again incorrectly surprised that they did this - it seems perfectly obvious that there's no money to be made with this stuff, why the hell do they keep doubling down? At some point the server bills are gonna kick them in the ass.

@jwz @jef The Citibike kiosks have card readers (and presumably cameras). So a stolen credit card and a mask could seem like a low traceability way to go faster than walking. And given NYC traffic, it won't be much slower than a car, and it's way more maneuverable.

@inthehands Someone else said it first, but when there's no justice available, people will DIY it. The damn fool CEOs and billionaires should take this as a wakeup call that they can't go on taking everything forever. People are going to fight back.
