You should post about the routine bomb threats called in to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The routine shut downs. A colleague of mine in the states mentioned this and I have to say it shook me on a personal level in a way that other stuff hasn't.

It's a context thing.

That statement comes from a time when censorship was actually a thing and speaking against a government as casually as we do now was sedition and carried prison time or worse.

A lot of people would say that "being trans is awesome actually" shouldn't be allowed. And where are these guys then? Same place as the 2A people during the BLM protests. At home ignoring tyranny.

Rather suggests where their values lie.

It does slightly blow my mind that people can, in one breath, insist that people never fundamentally change, that redemption is impossible, and then, in the next, insist that they believe they can learn things and how embarrassing they found their younger selves.

People don't change unless they want to but they can do it. Older people can learn things, older people can change how they live their lives.

I didn't say it was easy, but it happens. Your personality isn't set in stone.

Would it not be better to encourage a fundraising culture on instances so that they are self-supporting?

Openness about the costs of running it and the costs of supporting moderators in terms of therapy, administration, cycling them through, and even (whisper it) paying them?

Seems like this would be an easy carrot to go with the defed stick?

The problem is going to be one of moderation and volume. Some servers are very robust and have fairly low risk populations.

I guess it depends on how "compulsory" Barcelona adoption is and how Meta intends to fund it.

Whilst brands aren't enjoying pinkwashing as much atm, they still don't want to appear next to swastikas and slurs.

Currently @mastodon.social is so poorly moderated it appears unmoderated.

@Gargron proposes that all future accounts join that server by default.

Mastodon is gaining 600k active users per month.

It is good to get people off Twitter. It is less good to move them to an effectively unmoderated silo.

See who is advocating this and know that they don't want to protect minorities who benefit from moderation.

As I understand it, at its current size, mastodon.social is the largest server.

Current rate of growth of Mastodon, but now it's all on social. Seems like those are big numbers to stay on top of.

Can they keep up with the moderation? They seem to be struggling now, but maybe that's just my perception.

If you tell me, "PJ they'll manage fine." Then I'll believe you. You're far better informed than me but honestly that seems like it's not part of the plan.

In the UK there's the concept of "parliamentary privilege". When an elected politician is speaking in a house of government, their speech is protected such that they can't be sued.

Downside you'd see more use of hate speech in government. Upside, politicians would be able to call out bad actors like companies which enables the press to report on the speech (except you know, the billionaires own them too ).
