    Ah, it appears liberal cis straight white dudes are advocating for freedom of speech for nazis who want to genocide certain minorities again. If you're the type of person who says "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" I invite you to read up on the paradox of tolerance because saying shit like that is how fascism proliferates. Do you want fascism to proliferate?

      Attached: 1 image Hey, y'all, small heads up about Popehat. Thought he was an ally, but I was sadly mistaken. Not calling for blocks or dog piling (seriously, frickin' don't) or anything. Just... more evidence that cishet white men can't be trusted to contribute to our safety. 😢

      It's an understandable position to hold as definitely people of my generation growing up were taught that that position was virtuous and reasonable. But I feel like after it allowed fascists like Trump and the Jan 6th insurrectionists to proliferate and start taking over America you maybe should've updated your worldview as new evidence became available. No, it is not virtuous to defend books calling for the genocide of trans people, or any minority, under the banner of free speech. Especially when you yourself live under the specter of fascism which is already actively genociding those minorities.

      And before you accuse me of hyperbole I must remind you that multiple states in the US have passed anti trans legislation that falls under some of the definitions of genocide, so yes, it is actively happening and if you defend people like this you are literally defending genocidal fucking fascists.

      @eniko @Impossible_PhD Freedom of speech is a right that is valued but that right comes with responsibilities. That’s why there are laws that among others define hate speech. Free speech absolutists are completely reckless. We somehow are losing our way to these absolutists without any kind of accountability. I think that the Fediverse has an opportunity to define a standard on how we handle this accountability. That’s by no means guaranteed right now though.

      @eniko What strikes me is that when I look for academic takes on the relation between tolerance and "social contracts" ( https://mstdn.social/@ZhiZhu/109501714219730850 )... there's barely nothing.

      It's trully shocking that the best takes on the topic are in the form of memes, and a couple of blog articles.

        Attached: 1 image The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, not as a moral standard, but as a social contract. If someone does not abide by the contract, then they are not covered by it. In other words: The intolerant are not abiding by the terms of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered by the contract, and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated. #Tolerance #Intolerance #Morality #Society #Meme #Memes

      Idk man I just think if you consider yourself this truly enlightened being that you probably wouldn't be pro-fascism or pro-genocide

      @eniko

      It's a context thing.

      That statement comes from a time when censorship was actually a thing and speaking against a government as casually as we do now was sedition and carried prison time or worse.

      A lot of people would say that "being trans is awesome actually" shouldn't be allowed. And where are these guys then? Same place as the 2A people during the BLM protests. At home ignoring tyranny.

      Rather suggests where their values lie.
