@mekkaokereke the thing about the "marketplace of ideas" argument is that it's only a marketplace if people play by the rules. That's how a marketplace works. People can only claim to participate in the "marketplace of ideas" if they actually debate in good faith, and other participants are welcome to protect the marketplace by shunning them, just like fraudsters and theives being kicked out of a commercial marketplace.

@ajlanes @goatsarah @zoe Cinderford (near the forest of dean) has a GF chip shop! 40 mins drive from home but we make occasional pilgrimages, or stop there if we are in the area anyway!

@goatsarah my wife is gluten intolerant, and attempting to feed her (southern UK) when out and about is such a gamble. Sometimes there's just nothing available. I have a stock of GF pot noodle type things in the van with equipment to boil water, just to be sure I can feed her in a pinch. But "group of friends just nipping out to lunch together" isn't a thing we can generally do.

@zoe @goatsarah things were better for a bit when GF was a trendy diet, but it's veganism's turn now! Which would be nice for me (a vegetarian) except it's all "fake meat" type vegan food, and as a LIFELONG vegetarian, that's a bit gross from my perspective 😆 my wife and I are in a dark time for easy food!

@inthehands hahahah! I was once brought in as a technical consultant by a primarily sales org that, wanting a product in a new sector to sell, had gone out and bought the two biggest competitors in the space and told them to merge to make a really good product. And they didn't understand why these two teams that had been built around beating each other and developing contradicting worldviews to differentiate their products couldn't just merge their products...

@goatsarah same! I grew up in a declining industrial town, as the child of an unemployed single mother, growing our own food, couldn't afford a car, etc. I'm now a successful engineer and rich beyond my wildest childhood dreams (not a millionaire or anything, but still). And I want a UBI, and a free NHS with staff who get reasonable pay and work reasonable hours, and for kids to get free school meals, and nobody to be homeless or hungry. Can society afford that? Yes. Poverty costs us all.

@dashrandom @dansup @pixelfed nano, avalanche, and IIRC another have no fees and quick transactions and no wasteful mining; those technical problems have been solved, but nobody cares because the economics have been so thoroughly corrupted! I'm kinda hoping that something might arise that's just for fun and showing content creators you like them or something, so it actually has a use of its own rather than being defined by its dollar worth on exchanges and all that...
