The difference here is that delay/force makes the expression only evaluate when you force it, and that will then be cached, so you can define it whenever and then it won't evaluate until you call it.
Pretty much. My use cases can be sorted into: EXT4 is most suitable, or ZFS is. BTRFS has always had weird interactions with locking up my entire system if I download games onto it (disabling CoW remedies it, but I still have lockups in some situations.) I also made the mistake of formatting a drive as bcachefs because I thought it looked promising as a GPL ZFS alternative, but I now have zero trust in the main developer and it has been removed from Linux 😭
Moral of the story: File systems with a good reputation have that reputation for a reason and should be trusted unless you know you have a specific use case or you're sure you're not making a headache for yourself.
I also want to stress that I don't think the solution for making Free Software (or tech in general) spaces more welcoming differs between trans women or cis women. What we're talking about here is specifically the *how we got here*, but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that, looking forward, increasing inclusivity doesn't divide us between races, being trans or cis, etc. The fundamental goal is to *include* more people and that is done by being more welcoming. I think that more women (*all* women) in the space will naturally make the space more welcoming to women (again, *all* women,) because that is what I see in the communities I am personally in, both on- and offline.
Sorry, but I *really* don't think that's what they're saying here.
People's perceptions of someone don't necessarily align well with internal identity. We trans people know that better than most, I would argue. The way someone is treated growing up, and the resources and encouragement they may have been offered does NOT invalidate their identity. I can hold that I am a woman, *and* that others' perceptions of me growing up have shaped which interests of mine they nurtured. Many cis women do not get the same opportunities that I have, *not* because of my identity, the validity thereof, or their identity, but because of others' perceptions and their sexist notions.
To me, it is a far stretch to go from pointing out that « society largely has sexist attitudes which are applied based on bigoted people's perceptions of others » to « trans women are men because they were raised as such. » Actually, these are diametrically opposed points in my view.
All correct here except for -gamy, which comes from Greek gamos (γαμος) meaning marriage. You were probably thinking of -gyny, as in polygyny, contrasted with polyandry, which comes from Greek gyne (γυνη) meaning woman.
(This might be super nerdy but I love Greek and couldn't help myself :ablobcatheartsqueeze:)
Hmm... At the risk of sounding nitpicky I'm not sure there's a binary of monogamous/polyamorous. Saying this because as someone who's aromantic I don't know if monogamous is really applicable to me, and poly definitely isn't 😅
I mean, from a physicists/computer scientist's point of view of just « how can we make the universe do what we want » I do genuinely think this is cool, but the selling of it as the next big thing rather than something we can learn about our universe from is gross and embarrassing.
However, it’s also important to note that the ability to factor 15 on current quantum hardware assumes some amount of simplification of Shor’s algorithm. “There are different ways to write the factor 15 algorithm, and if you simplify it sufficiently, well, then you can run it, but it's not terribly meaningful,” Chuang said. “If you write it in a way that can scale such that not only could it factor 15, but also 21 and larger numbers, that is hard, and that's an extremely good test of the sophistication of a system.”
I have not kept up with quantum computing at all but when I look it up I get a bunch of businesses articles being like « It's already here and you should invest invest invest » and then Wikipedia which says it's nowhere close to wide scale real world usage.
I have become javapilled. I already liked Java, and had done maintenance of Java applications, but writing new Java code is actually fun. I like the language :)
I have used the JDK a lot, but ironically enough basically none of it Java directly for my personal projects.
Does anyone know a good solution for listening to YouTube channels through a podcast app? Preferably something I can self host, if additional infrastructure is needed, but something that doesn't have to be open to the public, ie requiring authentication to create a new feed. If that is not possible I can settle for using WireGuard.
@cwebber Making sure people with differing opinions on immigration and gender can express their opinion... Like, my identity is not merely a difference in opinion. There are people who do not want me to exist. There is no arguing with that and the best you can do is make the platform safe by NOT allowing that shit on it.
But Zuckerberg knows this, and he does not care about the damage this will cause, because in the end he is banking on the fact that fascists will earn him more money than the minorities he will endanger. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but shit like this is why it is vital to build alternatives like the Fediverse where the people with the most capital don't get to decide these things without any oversight.
While I may not be a Christian, I do find the Quaker tradition of calling every being, non-human and human alike, your "fellow creature" to be very endearing and cool!
