The Southwest Coast trail has definitely been tempting me.

The aspen and fall colors at Convict Lake are breathtaking. I’ve never seen fall colors pop like this and I’m head over heels in love with Mammoth Lakes after only a few short days.

This morning though, it’s off to my first planned destination: Great Basin National Park.

@castano Laurel Peak almost certainly got a dusting of now yesterday, but I haven't seen it personally. There *was* enough snow on Mammoth to snowboard, I know that much.

As for the fall colors, they are popping so beautifully at Convict Lake!

@dudalias That's a clever and cheap solution! I might chase that down when I get home.

For now, I'm using this "very fancy" method of a perfectly sized box, and a hand-made marble board (Aggravation) my grandpa made for us grandkids before he passed.

And hopefully I'll run into people who want to play :)

@thibaultamartin @Jojonintendo I'll be honest: I haven't hit the first national park yet. Because Mammoth Lakes is blowing my mind and I don't want to leave.

@pkufeldt Thanks for the tip! I was originally going to include Glacier NP in my trip, but many people advised I save that and Yellowstone for their own unique trip.

@dm Thanks Dave! I'm basically unaffected by no one operating entrance gates because I have an America the Beautiful pass. The only *admittedly selfish* concern is that visitor shops won't be open if they're not operated by contractors.

Why admittedly selfish? Because I want to slap some stickers on my new adventure car :)

Hmm. Maybe this was the wrong time to embark on a national parks tour...

Or maybe it was the PERFECT time?

As I drove through Yosemite yesterday on my way to Mammoth Lakes, I did notice Tioga Rd seemed particularly busy for October. Perhaps because no one had to pay entrance fees?

I'm not sure what to expct when I get to Great Basin and Zion. I'll definitely share my observations.
