    Mark Zuckerberg releases an absolutely chilling 6 minute speech where he announces that recent elections "feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing free speech" https://www.facebook.com/zuck/videos/1525382954801931/

    "We are going to get rid of restrictions around topics around topics like gender and immigration"

    A summary thread on Bluesky but I actually recommend listening to the entire nightmare if you can https://bsky.app/profile/brianstelter.bsky.social/post/3lf5mlbzka22p

      This sleazy fuck thinks that our freedom of speech and prioritizing it depends upon election outcomes

      The Founders inscribed the #FirstAmendment so that we would have it even when the pro-tyranny contingent and their beneficiaries wins elections

      @cwebber Making sure people with differing opinions on immigration and gender can express their opinion... Like, my identity is not merely a difference in opinion. There are people who do not want me to exist. There is no arguing with that and the best you can do is make the platform safe by NOT allowing that shit on it.

      But Zuckerberg knows this, and he does not care about the damage this will cause, because in the end he is banking on the fact that fascists will earn him more money than the minorities he will endanger. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but shit like this is why it is vital to build alternatives like the Fediverse where the people with the most capital don't get to decide these things without any oversight.

      @cwebber thanks for calling attention to it! Now watching it.

      My first reaction: "free speech", "legacy media" both make an appearance right away and that is telling.

      Funny that "drugs" is the first item in the list of "bad things" that includes terrorism and child exploitation (!), given that... some drugs are good. Maybe he meant illegal ones? Anyway :)

      @cwebber wow, moving moderation from California to Texas to "restore trust"... is not even the weirdest thing here by far. This is cynical levels of bowing to Trump and beyond.

      @flancian @cwebber this was the scariest part to me, tbh

      moderation/trust & safety proactively being positioned to work with legal demands from Paxton et al is nightmare fuel. no other way to read it

      @cwebber translation:
      - switch "recent elections" with "the recent US election specifically"
      - switch "cultural tipping point" with "financial threat"
      - switch "prioritizing free speech" with "enabling genocides and fascism"

      sure there some weasel words there but otherwise this is a pretty naked way to declare that they're not even gonna *pretend* to care about injustice anymore.
