Your HR department is called a Union.

They break the rule: those that pay, choose.
They are laundering intent, washing away the wishes of users and spending money while disconnecting and disempowering the people who should be at the heart of free software. People.
i.e A callous silly-con valley bs factory.
There's this idea for #inkscape UX that I can't stop thinking about. The suggestion is... using the caps lock.
So the suggestion was that some of the difficulty we have we sharing modifier keys could be alleviated if *some* of the functionality was a mode of the caps lock that when on would change the behaviour of some transformation and moving processes.
It sounds like both a terrible idea and a really interesting idea at the same time and I'm torn.
Imagine the CL fixed the ratio?
I have the same feelings about the Free Software cultures I hang out it. As one of the few working class, not university educated programmers it's very clear that there is a pre-thought consensus about simple things like labour, and getting people to do work. A contribution that is easy for a well heeled college grad is a cruel request on a single parent living day to day.
Yet we need diversity, the lack of it eats at our creativity.
Meta tip, do you tip in order to express your tip dislike?
I added those in Inkscape 1.4, you can select it from the "New from Template" or the start screen.
No one 😢

New word alert!
Echosystem - An ecosystem which only has internal inputs and not outside ones. Imagine a cave system.
But for #FreeSoftware projects, what we want is a wide #ecosystem and maybe not so much a closed #echosystem
Had to explain to another user why asking a volunteer project to fix an issue is inappropriate.
And I get that's it's a really subtle point here between saying "I also have this problem" (fine) and "Please fix this issue" (not ok)
i.e. You can only ask people you have a relationship with to do work for you. You can NOT ask strangers to labour for you for free, even if you think it's important, or appropriate.
This is how we normalize Linux use:

No pushiness, or advice, just existing positively in non #Foss spaces.
I asked for a review of the memory management for my new #inkscape PDF exporter. And the reviewer actually tested the results!
It's not ready yet! It's missing so much! DRAFT! DRAFT!
... wait, that's actually really good ... I guess my code is working better than I thought... minus gradients. 😅
I've never felt that FS folks were deliberately privileged. Only that the movement is born out of that population who are often forgetful of economic realities
I part quoted because I don't disagree with anything else. I guess I should have stated more clearly that since freedom is dependant on economic viability for most users, it is a core, non-optional part of the business and politics of Free Software
I particularly keenly agree with keeping space for people who are hobbiests
I agree with everything!
Except this: "not about money or not"
The FS world is built from such libertarian privilege that the idea of economic competence being a necessary component is maligned and actively sidelined. Not important they said.
Prey tell how a non programmer is to exercise her freedoms properly when there's no one organized enough to be hired to do the work b/c we pat ourselves on the back for our freedoms we forget about accessiblty.
Would any #inkscape #flatpak users like to make some screenshots for 1.4? I can't make them myself because my operating system (popOS) doesn't have window shadows so it'll fail the checks.
They have some pretty tight requirements: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/metainfo-guidelines/quality-guidelines/#screenshots
We're currently using just one screenshot, but I think inkscape should have four showing some different things you can do with the program.
Hey media, yes you. You know the word "impartial"? Delete it from your dictionary right now. You don't need it.
Your job is not to have "no side", your job has side. It is to be firmly and unwaveringly on the side of truth and the interests of the people, especially the disadvantaged, against the powers that would own them.
If you keep on with this pseudo-scientific "outside observer" bullshit we shall have to think that you have a side and just don't want to say what it is. 🤨
People are not collations of logic; they are a run on sentence of the fanfic stories of the things they've heard that flow into what they already know.
Resisting going with your own mental flow takes work. You've got to rewind, rewrite whole chapters of the story, make it all make sense.
Yes, a lot of it is protecting one's own ego, especially if it's become a life totem, but it's a lot of self-introspection-aversion too.
Sometimes I want the #mastodon star button to be replaced by a hug button.
We've had another #school ask for a certified #inkscape from the project. Various laws have required #software vendors to tick boxes, but we're not a company as a project.
But I am a company as a person.
Would is be silly to sell an Inkscape for Schools and do all the certification work? Put in some custom graphics and maybe strip out the extensions manager and limit the clipart library importer (two inet access tools)
The code would still be foss, but the cert dist would be paid. Thoughts?
There seems to be an inflection point where if you are famous enough, mastodon is terrible.
Ask Will Wheaton or @TechConnectify or any of the other people I've seen face this same bullshit.
If it wasn't an issue, it wouldn't keep happening. Question is; what to do about it. And ironically, talking about fixing it on Mastodon is terrible too. It's almost as if talking about the thing on the thing is like crossing the streams and blowing apart the social contract.
This evening myself, @teruterubozu and @Luna_vio went to the "Local Hand" arts and crafts shop to do a "Painting Pet Bowl" event. Just a bit of fun.
I was put on the spot a bit though when it came to the design; The cat I'm making a bowl for is "Pratchett" and I put together this artwork (unvarnished in the photo):
Inkscape Programmer and Software Freedom Contractor. Graphics, art, computers, politics, ideas, science.Politics: A socialist... well, a federated pro-social consensualist... er, or something like that.Meme Immunity: Innate rebel, adaptive skeptic, and pro-humilityPronouns: they/themCulture: British, Northern, Industrialist, Riverfolk, Pro-Sustainability, Pie.My avatar image is a cartoon cat in a bowler hat with a spanner and overalls working on a machine.
