    YES, you can develop, support open source/Free Software (FOSS) projects as an unpaid hobby, just for fun.

    YES, you can develop and support #FOSS projects as (big or small) part of your paid job or as freelancer.

    YES, you can develop and support FOSS projects by asking for donations.

    And yes, all of these approaches can exist at the same time. YOU decide. FOSS is about freedom, not about money or not.

    And NO, you owe no-one an explanation or justification on why you do #FOSS the way you do.

      @jwildeboer
      One can also sponsor the development of a feature one wants, either alone or in a group of sponsors, to be granted to the (one or many devs) implementing team, or a fork is there is no agreement with the core dev team.

      It's not just a one way ticket!

      And, very important:

      YES, you are always free to decide to stop or reduce spending your time on FOSS and focus on more important things in your life.

      FOSS should be fun, satisfying, rewarding and a positive part of your life. YOU come first. Never forget!

      @jwildeboer Also note that RedHat complains about people who build clones of RHEL that they "add no value". But they operate under the license and spirit (!) of FOSS. So it is not your business to ask them for even an explanation of what they do. They have the right to do that, and I'd you don't like it, you can stop taking FOSS for your "looks like proprietary software, feels like it, is priced like it, but actually is FOSS".

      @jwildeboer Except the author. When you make FOSS as unpaid hobby, and a big company takes it, violates the spirit of FOSS, and tries to navigate through loopholes in the license to maximise their profit, THEN you have every right to demand an explanation.

      "The tragedy of the commons" is mostly wrong, but it has one valid point: once big corp tries to use commons to maximize their profits, they will in the process destroy it.

      I agree with everything!

      Except this: "not about money or not"

      The FS world is built from such libertarian privilege that the idea of economic competence being a necessary component is maligned and actively sidelined. Not important they said.

      Prey tell how a non programmer is to exercise her freedoms properly when there's no one organized enough to be hired to do the work b/c we pat ourselves on the back for our freedoms we forget about accessiblty.

      @jwildeboer Even more important:

      NO, nobody can tell you whether you are doing enough or not. Only YOU decide that.

      (Yes, this happened to me a few times... 😦)
