One question/comment I get from people who think of leaving Facebook for the Fediverse is "How can I just share my posts so my friends can see them? I don't really like to post publicly."
What is the answer to that?
Do you create an account, post only to followers, then approve all followers?
@voxpelli Codeberg is non-profit, community-led, outside the US, and it's close enough to how GitHub works that it made sense to me. I'm not much of a software developer and just need a place to share/store some code occasionally.
I was also able to import my old GitHub stuff into Codeberg easily.
I finally got around to financially supporting 404 Media because they are doing great work.
"It is possible to build alternatives to Elon Muskโs X, Mark Zuckerbergโs Instagram, and whatever TikTok will become. It is happening, and it is necessary. A different way is possible, if we build it."
When I got online (which was, you know, three decades ago) there was this idea that you would be a good "Netizen" or a good "citizen of the net", and I guess that at some point such an idea died... but we need to bring it back. I mean, I think it's still a thing on the Fediverse at least.
@ascentale@pete I take part in one monthly group ride and you need to check their Instagram account to see if it's happening or canceled or rescheduled and there's no other way...
And sometimes part of the group stars from a different location (near my house) but you might not know that until the night before so... ? ? ?
The way it's organized is not ideal (for me) but the group itself is great.
@bikemonterey@ascentale@pete Frustrating! At least for the Instagram announced one you just need to hit the page and it's the first bit of text you see. I started writing code to grab it so I can do a diff to see if the text changes and alert me...
I met a guy who complained about a group that had an RSS feed and I said "That would be a dream!" because you can do *so much* with a simple RSS feed...
This sort of reminds me of the origin story of MakerBot. Basically every engineer said "that won't work" but a couple of makers & hackers said "we're gonna try it anyway" and got desktop 3D printing to move forward with an actual product.
Sometimes it's what you *do* know that prevents you from doing something.
Can scanning a QR code do this? I want to call bullshit because Iโve seen two (non-techie) friends share this. Can a computer security expert weigh in on this?
> โThere is a QR code to scan, and once scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.โ
@lzg Our local bike advocacy group has a whole program on pedestrian safety and tries to promote safer streets all around. I think this is the way to do it, recognize that with unsafe driving everyone loses, especially bikers and walkers. (I was a huge walker who moved to biking but I know itโs not for everyone.)
