@untilted I say this specifically because more people I know in the indie/art games space, including those who've applied for arts grants are on BS, rather than here. But I'm not a fan of their model (personal data stores aside), so here I remain.
I'm also something of an acquired taste, so I hear you on that front, though.
Thank you! I'm travelling at [disgusting-in-the morning] tomorrow, but I think even though you're in the UK (I have a passport for there, but don't live there atm) there's still going to be some common ground, as I'm after a vibe check what's getting money as much as anything else.
I'll send a hopefully-not-too-onerous clutch of question as they come to me/get assembled in good order.
Oh, did you apply as an individual or as an organisation?
TYSM for the pointed, @torstentorsten !
@burningTyger Yes, you are correct, and I have collected several of these, thank you for the reminder of its importance.
However, I gather from lectures I've attended by industry peers who've taken this route that the climate and tastes of grant-giving bodies can be quite zeitgeist-driven both in terms of the the kind of art that's being awarded grants and the kinds of organisations favoured by different bodies.
For example, I would be wasting my time applying to a grant that has primarily favoured SMEs making mainstream commercial releases.
I'm after a vibe check as much as a bit of low-key mentoring.
I know this is the kind of question I probably ought to sign up to Bluesky to ask but:
Do I know anyone who's applied (successfully or unsuccessfully) for a European arts grant to help fund production of a video game or other forms of interactive art?
And if so, could I ask you a few incredibly basic questions?
@Cal Sometimes it's pertinent...

(not a cover but you can definitely shout the word in the breaks. and drink the thing.)
That must be such a tremendous relief. I'm so happy you've moved somewhere that's actually habitable
@sinvega omg Sin, this is a perfect post
@erosdiscordia Thank you. 🖤 Honestly, I have by this point gone most of the way through long-term-trauma residue and right into the sun-dappled meadows of "making people who do apologia for this shit really fucking uncomfortable"
@sinvega yeah, he does lean a tad heavily into insipid Vaughan Williams pastiche territory (not that I'm setting myself up as a more capable composer, but I'm certainly able to observe the phenomenon).
But this industry loves to make legends of (certain kinds of) people, which seems to enable and encourage harm more often than not.
Mmm. Yeah. Nathalie's radical honesty has influenced me a great deal, which is part of how I finally came to terms with using some of my own experiences - not related to this industry, I'll add - in my art and games. If I don't own them, then who does? Who else has the right?
He appears to have retired, yes. In a world that is not in any way set up for restorative justice, this is probably one of the more positive outcomes one could hope for. No further lauds and privileges.
Are you aware of the work of the late Kirill Pokrovsky, a classically trained composer who worked extensively with Larian Studios, having previously been part of the Soviet metal scene?

@Bright5park exactly so, I agree.
@Njord @eniko Yeah, and it's definitely a partial result of the industry's power dynamics and obsessive worship of supposed genius as opposed to the far more real grinding effort and quiet dedication that goes into the work.
@eniko Yeah. I periodically get angry about it and this is one of those instances.
Jeremy Soule raped someone I know.

Because Jeremy Soule is a rapist, and this post details exactly why and how that's entwined with his music.

Note that Nathalie is nonbinary and now uses they/them pronouns.
Oh hey, Bethesda made it really easy for me not to buy Oblivion Remastered by not replacing the soundtrack.
As ever: No I shall not separate the artist from the fucking art. These are not separable things.
@LianSirenia I find they prefer this to the accurate answer...
