@beadsland @mlncn I might eventually appreciate the advantages of USB C, but I don't replace my devices often, so it's just another port to me right now.

Durability seems to be improving (my first USB C phone died of port failure almost a decade ago, as did two ports that I replaced on my second, but my third is actually hanging in there; my only USB C computer isn't being a problem).

But the USB C port on my new MIDI keyboard is more prone to its cable being knocked out than any of my older gear's USB A or MIDI DIN ports.

It seems to be a milksop to compliance.

I have devices that appear to use USB C but actually use a special unconventionality wired cable and won't charge with anything else. There are no distinguishing physical or tactile markers to indicate this.

USB C as an analogue audio pass-through for wired headphones or speakers remains unsatisfactory and many adaptors are subject to interference from other pins (UGreen is the cheapest brand ive found to produce satisfactory adaptors).

I appreciate the ideal of a single universal connector, and I didn't like micro USB much, but with such random quality and functionality, USB C feels like it's nowhere close to where it ought to be.

I now get why the Arch users are all so keen.

The level of granular control and encouragement to get elbow-keep into all the settings and moving parts of the OS really do put the magic back into computing.

And I do sometimes have a complicated relationship with the work of some people who've done sus shit, but honestly the whole situation with Gaiman felt so personally shocking (I'd liked his work for years! I've been to live readings! I've met the man! I'd been told that he was an incredible asshole to work with and about all the Scientology shit, but never imagined...) and it so immediately cauterised out all the good feeling I ever had for the things he did. I don't even want to touch the books I have to dispose of them.

But I'm never going to be able to deny my past enjoyment of his work or way it's woven into my life.

That the problem with painting people as monsters... those who do monstrous things can, in fact, be as nuanced and complex and as creative as any of us.

The halo effect makes it so easy to overlook signs of terrible things in people we like, and asserting that morally inexcusable people could only ever be vapid hacks in their creative milieux ... it's strange and counterproductive.

Sorry, I'm rambling now, I think.

@peachymist @wizardneedsfood I don't find that any objective quality of a work changes upon my discovery of something distasteful about its author, but often find that my own relationship with the work changes profoundly as a result.

I'm aware of what's going on psychologically, but if I were to come back to a work after time only to find that it tasted like ashes in my mouth due to my newfound knowledge, I might question what quality had ever been there?
