Many users of the fedi probably don't see the extent of the spam & bot activity on network as their server admins & moderators act like human firewalls keeping spam & bots out of your feed & mentions

You probably haven't seen it as it gets dealt with quickly & on metalhead.club we don't talk about it much as we believe our members should be able to enjoy the server & the network without worrying about it

@thomas the admin of metalhead.club is one of the most patient people you'll meet, he's asking for this as it's needed

Someone found this useful, so I will share in case it helps others:

If you log into your fediverse account using a web browser you can explore the account settings and find things that are not available via the mobile applications

There it's possible to find lots of things, such as:

Set account to slow mode - stop the constant motion of your feeds so you can look when you have time

Add an alt text to your banner and profile pictures

See server announcements

If you change some settings & save them, they will remain changed when you go back to using your mobile application :)

Recent activity shows as the fediverse ages many servers will continue without issues, however, some have been abandoned by their admins, but not unplugged.

Everyday users shouldn't be burdened with admin or mod issues, but maybe it's good to keep a casual eye on the health of your server by doing any of the following occasionally:

Check the admin is active on the system

Check the server gets software updates

Check your local server timeline to see what content is posted, what's permitted on the server, if there's content that should be moderated but isn't

If your server passes the health check, great!

If it raises doubts consider investigating more 🙏

I know you all know, but it never hurts to remind people 🙏

The fediverse doesn't do verification of accounts for monetisation

No moderation team, admin, or account on any other server other than the one your account is on can freeze, block, hide, suspend your account beyond its own server.

Whatever server you are on, it's always good to know who your admin account/s are & to know them, or how they work a little 😊

Plus, if you get a scam message, please report it so your server moderation team are aware & can deal with it 🙏

Autonomous AI accounts are well & truly here on the fedi with the latest being a domain dedicated to providing space for bots to "talk for themselves on the fediverse"

How about they talk by themselves while they're at it? Hmmm?

There's no space for AI accounts sending unsolicited messages trying to engage in conversation

If you heard any strange thudding last night & this morning on metalhead.club & mastoart.social it was the moderation teams lobbing the AI accounts over the boundary fence ;)

Today I found a Mastodon server that provides a free service for its local community - the server is open sign up with no human check first - but it also offers a series of paid services.

The top-tier paid service includes spreadsheets of the user's stats, linking up and optimising someone's accounts across many different platforms, an AI assistant to help write your posts & help to optimise your following count (and more).

The server has 1.4K MAU and there are accounts of people with the paying for the extra services badges ...

Self-promotion as a musician can be hard, that's why #MusiciansDay is celebrated twice a year 🎵

It gives all the bands and musicians on the fediverse the chance to promote their work and projects, and music fans can show their support by boosting, liking and commenting on the posts. 🎉

Oh my! The scam wave has changed to trying to entice people to click on links by offering a monetary scheme for making posts, they just need to verify your account to set it up.

You probably already know the fedi does not have money for this type of thing, but just in case:

Always check what sort of account you are dealing with, and what they are offering before you click on any links.

There is no monetary scheme for posting on the fediverse.

And if something looks too good to be true, it usually is a scam.
