It just occurred to me that none of the classic #InstantMessaging systems are still running. #ICQ, #AOLInstantMessenger, #YahooMessenger, and #MSNMessenger are all gone. I have lost contact with all my old friends there. I doubt I'll ever hear from them again.

The #OpenSource, #federated competitor to these protocols, #XMPP, remains in operation and has outlived them all. So did #IRC, the protocol that arguably inspired them.

Proprietary software and protocols come and go, but #FOSS endures.

Is #JDVance somehow unaware that his party's disastrous economic policy has *forced* women to seek career employment? It's not a choice. It's not optional. Being a #housewife is impossible because you'll lose your house very quickly. It's been that way ever since #Reagan destroyed the #MiddleClass, and #Vance has yet to propose any serious solution to this problem.

I doubt it. If that were going to happen, it would have happened already, after Trump lost in 2020.

If those people are as politically astute as they present themselves to be, then they know exactly what they're doing. Trump trolls, the whole rotten lot of them.

Imagine a grocery store that works like this:

There are no price tags anywhere. You only find out how much you have to pay when they send you a bill a month later. They can charge any amount they want, and they always charge ludicrous prices because they can. If you don't pay, you can't get any more groceries at that store, your credit rating drops, and you might even be sued. All other grocery stores in the country work the same way.

    That's US #HealthCare in a nutshell.

I was recently told that a blood test would cost me $20. Then I got a bill for $200.

Trump will see the latter figure increased to $2000. Death to the sick, that's his motto.

Radical left would be stuff like collective ownership of all businesses, or a wealth tax whose top bracket is 100%. Drastic restructuring of society. Not anything Harris and Walz have proposed.

They have been told that their god demands they forcibly eradicate all disobedience of their religion's commands, up to and including killing those who disobey, and that their god will punish them with infinite torture should they fail to do so.

Seems awfully convenient for whichever long-dead desert warlord concocted this belief system, doesn't it?

    > Is anyone really surprised that a Jewish politician of a major American political party toes the line on Israel?

Yeah, I am. Massacring civilians is always wrong, no matter who does it. After what Jews have been through in WW2, I would expect them to understand that better than anyone. Many do, but sadly not all.

    > If … then they aren't using good democratic calculus.

Indeed, they're not. If they were, Trump wouldn't be tied with Harris right now.

People would rather do what they feel like and rationalize as needed, than carefully consider the consequences and morality of their actions before committing them. Easier that way. Weaklings.

If she picks Josh Shapiro, it won't be only bots that are angry. Gen Z voters will be alienated as well, and we need them. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Shapiro section “Views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

On the other hand, if she doesn't pick Shapiro, polls say she'll lose Pennsylvania, without which she is unlikely to win the election.

    We live in scary times…
