I guess some people think “infrastructure” means only servers.

Which, yeah, aren't running Windows and weren't affected by today's debacle (although they've had their moments).

But servers aren't very useful by themselves. The whole point of servers is that you interact with them using some other device…which runs Windows, and is currently on fire.

Cognitive ability isn't even the biggest problem. Biden could be literally dead, and he still would be preferable. Corpses don't take away people's health care, crash the economy with extreme tariffs, or any of the rest of the frightening things Trump says he'll do with the absolute power we're about to give him.

And how come only the Democrat is expected to walk on water? Where the hell are the standards of behavior and competence for Republicans?

I'm afraid of them slipping further malware into my machine through their HTTPS interception, stealing my credit card number, etc. Or them getting compromised by criminals who then use their interception system to do that.

Anyway, apparently this is a thing in the Philippines, whose government is basically organized crime, from what I've heard, so I guess this is on-brand.

Once again, this only works if you have installed (malicious) software from your ISP on your computer. Otherwise, your browser will detect the interception and show a certificate error.

However, if your ISP is doing that, then *all* websites will show a certificate error, and will be inaccessible. To fix that without compromising your security, you must switch to a different ISP that actually respects your security, remove the intercepting device, or, yeah, use a VPN.

On a personal note, I would take extreme offense if my ISP attempted to do this. I consider it a cybercriminal attack on my systems' security.

The only way your ISP can do that is if you installed their malware on your computer. A VPN isn't going to save you from that.

In an emergency situation, humans instinctively obey whoever seems to know what's going on, and only start asking questions once the emergency is over.

Once, when I was a boy, I was stopped by the teacher as I was leaving the last class of the day, and taken to detention.

This shocked me, as I had not committed any offense worthy of detention. On the way there, I demanded to know why I was being #detained.

He told me, “There's plenty of innocent people in jail.”

He was callous, but not mistaken. #Innocence is indeed not a defense.

Thus began my lifelong fear of #police and the #law.

Indeed, and it's pretty hard to defend that independence against imperialistic aggression unless you have overwhelming firepower, i.e. nukes.

I wish it were not so. I wish that imperialistic aggression of any kind were met by an overwhelming non-nuclear response from the entire rest of the world. But as Ukraine can attest, that is not the world we live in.
