Soon, within the next two days, we will all learn who Harris's running mate is.

No matter who it is, we will immediately see pro-Trump leftist accounts come on here and tell us that he was such a terrible choice, we should now refuse to vote for Harris, and instead help Trump win.

Let's remember what these pro-Trump accounts are trying to do us, and preemptively get ready to say "fuck off, fascist."

@barney Perhaps someone can list the pro-Trump #Fascist accounts, for informational purposes, you understand.

Unfortunately, there are far too many pro-Trump leftist accounts here in the Fediverse to list all of them.

I just discovered a new one this morning: @soraxtmputinxi@mastodon.social

To help us understand what it's up to, it has conveniently placed Russian and Chinese flags in its name, and embedded both "Putin" and "Xi" in its handle.

Here's another pro-Trump leftist account that I recently came across. It wants to launch a "campaign against voting."

As soon as Harris announces her running mate, this pro-fascist asshole will say, "oh, if she's gonna pick THAT guy, then I refuse to vote for her."

But, really, it will just be the same pro-fascist bullshit that wolf[@]mastodon.social has been posting all along.

No sane person who cares about abortion rights, or LGBTQ rights, or Palestinians, or climate change, or any of the other the issues mentioned above, would ever consider abstaining from voting and helping Trump win. To do that would be absolutely bat-shit crazy.

No matter who Harris picks, the pro-Trump leftists will come out in force, trying to convince people to do something that is bat-shit crazy.

@argv_minus_one @barney Young people are more likely to be single-issue voters, and they’re also not a monolith. Their single issues include collectively contradictory topics such as LGBTQAI+ rights, support for Palestine, women’s rights, climate change, etc. The important questions are:
      1. Can these folx be educated/persuaded to consider multiple issues before voting
      2. What are the relative sizes of those subsets, and do (for example) Palestine-focused single-issue youth voters outnumber all other groups combined

I think you’re right to be concerned about the youth vote, but they’re more diverse than I think a lot of people give them credit for, and there are things we can all do to help them make nuanced, don’t-let-perfect-be-the-enemy-of-good voting decisions, rather than shallow single-issue ones.

If she picks Josh Shapiro, it won't be only bots that are angry. Gen Z voters will be alienated as well, and we need them. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Shapiro section “Views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.

On the other hand, if she doesn't pick Shapiro, polls say she'll lose Pennsylvania, without which she is unlikely to win the election.

      We live in scary times…

A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 50th attorney general of Pennsylvania from 2017 to 2023 and served on the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners from 2012 to 2017. After that, he worked as a senior adviser to U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli. Shapiro was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2004, defeating former Republican U.S. representative Jon D. Fox. He represented the 153rd district from 2005 to 2012. Shapiro was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners in 2011, marking the first time Republicans lost control of Montgomery County. Serving on the board from 2011 to 2017, he held the position of chairman, and in 2015, was also appointed chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency by Governor Tom Wolf. Shapiro ran for Pennsylvania attorney general in 2016...

This discussion is offensive, self-indulgent bullshit, cloaked in empty platitudes, and bordering on antisemitism.

Shapiro has called for respecting for Gazans' lives, and called Netanyahu "one of the worst leaders of all time." The idea that Shapiro's inclusion on the ticket would cause even one pro-Palestinian voter to support Trump, an Arab-hating psychopath who wants Netanyahu to "finish the problem," is fucking disgusting.

Actually, #ScienceFact, we are all emotional decision-makers. The rational part of our brain is only there to make up a good excuse for what we've done.

When our actions and values don't quite line up, as they are doing for many on the MAGA side and the extreme left, we use cognitive dissonance to help convince ourselves that they are aligned and we don't have to change at all.

The person who cuts down the last tree in the Amazon rainforest will have a good reason for it.

People would rather do what they feel like and rationalize as needed, than carefully consider the consequences and morality of their actions before committing them. Easier that way. Weaklings.

Given the history between US politics and blind support for Israel, you're letting your principles color your expectations of human beings.

No one is for massacring anyone. And, no one ever does massacre anyone, according to the massacrers. That wasn't a massacre. They deserved it. We were defending ourselves.

As a species our supervillain power is rationalization.

      > Is anyone really surprised that a Jewish politician of a major American political party toes the line on Israel?

Yeah, I am. Massacring civilians is always wrong, no matter who does it. After what Jews have been through in WW2, I would expect them to understand that better than anyone. Many do, but sadly not all.

      > If … then they aren't using good democratic calculus.

Indeed, they're not. If they were, Trump wouldn't be tied with Harris right now.

Is anyone really surprised that a Jewish politician of a major American political party toes the line on Israel? Do we really think that Shapiro can single-handedly form Harris' foreign policy on Israel-Palestinians.

If we have people saying, let's have Trump as president to keep Shapiro out of the vice presidency, then they aren't using good democratic calculus.
