Alex Heath reported that it wouldn't have ActivityPub integration up front (which makes sense). Not clear what the timeframe is, I saw somebody saying "a couple months" but don't know what that was based on. @codybrom@mstdn.social@kristian@calckey.social@arkd@mastodon.design
@lrhodes@merveilles.town No question that there was active hostility in quite a few cases (some of which were high-profile enough that they have a big impact on the toxicity of the brand) but only a few of the Black people I know who checked it out and decided not to stay describe that as their primary reason. Black people in the US are used to being met with hostility and it's everywhere -- which isn't to excuse it by any means, it just creates a dynamic where that by itself is only one the factors.
Some of the other aspects of it not being welcoming that I've heard from multiple people include: the lack of a support network (which @damon suggests may be the bigger factor), the lack of Black faces (which I just saw cited again), requests to CW posts about every day experiences (a good example of people communicating norms -- although these norms were have been applied in racist ways since 2017), the relatively-narrow focus of discussion, the repeated suggestions that the answer to racism here was to have Black-led instances, the lack of QTs and paucity of GIFs ... and Mastodon's apparent disinterest in changing any of this.
More positively there is a cohort who checked it out and decided to stay -- I think @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io described them as the "Somewhat Stubborn" folks who have seen this rodeo before -- which is a good thing. Less positively though it's still not clear whether enough of Mastodon is interested in changing these dynamics for things to change. Time will tell.
EDIT: fixed a typo, which naturally I didn't notice until after it had been boosted. Oops.
@atomicpoet I see. So the dev discussions on shared antennas you suggested I read don't actually exist yet. 🤔
Anyhow, @supakaity@blahaj.zone's searchableBy proposal is a great foundation to build on and with the right defaults (and inferences from other fediverse software that doesn't yet support the tags) could lead to a very good consent-based system. That said, layering new functionality like sharing often introduces new harassment vectors. So especially since most fediverse software doesn't have basic anti-harassment protections like turning off replies on posts that have been discovered by harassers, I still think @Uwu's question about whether introducing shared antennas introduces risks is very a good one.
@atomicpoet I'm not jumping to conclusions, I asked what if anything you're doing. I had seen @supakaity's initial post about searchability, interactivity, and quotability (in fact I think I even commented thanking her for it), but haven't seen any writeup about shared antennas. Do you have a link handy?
@atomicpoet Sorry, I don't mean to be disingenuous. I had asked What are the other examples where #Meta has "conceded" like this and it's worked out well for the communities they've "conceded" to?and I thought you were answering. If not, yeah, I did misread your post; apologies for the confusion on my part.
@atomicpoet I askedWhat are the other examples where #Meta has "conceded" like this and it's worked out well for the communities they've "conceded" to?... and you discussed RSS, XMPP, email, and Google Buzz.
Which really clarifies why we see things differently. If your standard for success for the products and communities you're building is "just as successful as RSS, XMPP, and Google Buzz", then you may well be right that working with #meta is the best way to get there.
But okay, let me rephrase the question in your terms. What are the other examples where #Meta has "conceded" like this and it's worked out well for the communities they've "conceded" to?
@evan@cosocial.ca Thanks for the response. What examples would you point to where communities have worked with Facebook on open standards in the way you're advocating and you see it as working out well for the communities involved?
@atomicpoet@calckey.social what are the successful examples you're thinking of for other social networks, communities, or messaging systems working with Facebook?
@goatsarah@thegoatery.dyndns.org your experience is probably typical. Most misskey users are on misskey.io and other Japan-focused sites so mostly federate with other Japan-focused sites.
