It is the quality of the users who made a conscious decision to stay on a platform that has allowed the worst of humanity to run stomping all over marginalized groups and aggressively promote violence through extreme ideologies. Meta is very bad and so many of those who chose to stay did so because they were permitted to spew the ugliness all over. This problem is the sum of its parts.

My experience is only with the damage Meta has done to this country. If facebook is the only internet available then that is unfortunate. I do not disagree with giving people options.

Why would people trust a new platform offered by Meta if they are wanting to get away from Meta?

Ok. I understand this. Now, you probably didn't intend to but, you just made me laugh (good laugh). If You have not convinced your Mom of the enlightened internet technology path then I do not hold out too much hope for the rest. You are truly an eternal optimist. That's a good thing! I know this whole process cannot be stopped. It will play out. I just hope I don't have to do a lot of instance jumping.

People cannot flee to Bluesky. They are invite only via those who already reside there. Think about that for one moment. Mastodon and the Fediverse are here now, and open to everyone.

Have you looked for people to follow on here? Have you boosted any posts of those you find funny or interesting? It can take a bit of getting used to but this is what real engagement arises from. Follow people without worrying about a follow back. The more you engage and support other people the better your experience. Ask @DemocracySpot or @Talia_christine. Play the @hashtaggames games every night. Follow @feditips. Make sure to set notifications on your favorite people.

@feditips This feels like a both sides are right scenario. If they can look at posts that minimize human suffering and feel ok about it then they are not what they purport to be. Thank you for digging.

Hey fediversians, I just want to gently remind you that your bot and spam battling, moderating admins host this most marvelous free of charge, no advertising, open discourse platform because it is a passion. They give endless hours to this pursuit around the clock. Your social media life is better for all of it. The cost to them is time and money. Please throw some dough, bread, moolah, ca$h, cabbage, dinero, ducats, splosh, etc, their way if you are able. It feels really good to give to them.

Honest question, why does the growth rate of the Fediverse matter? It was out there doing no growth for years. I don't think any platform will maintain the growth rate that they've had because of the Twitter break down. I want to understand why the urgency and what that does for the fediverse in the short term.

Also, you aren't taking into consideration the extraordinary amount of moderation that existing admins are going to have to deal with. The amount of toxicity that will be coming over from Facebook is going to be overwhelming. this would be a deterrent to running a server, thus reducing options in the Fediverse.
