   I don’t get how setting up lobby servers for the express purpose of helping people migrate from Meta is somehow “pro-Meta” when the objective is to get more people to, you know, stop using Meta.
   
   You know what’s a pro-Meta stance? Making it harder to leave Meta.

     If you’re an early user of anything, anything at all. You’ll very soon realize that your friends and family will almost never follow you right away. They’ll join much much later when the network effect kicks in.
     
     I could never convince anyone to drop skype for discord (I couldn’t use skype on linux and discord was less bad), ALL the people I couldn’t convince at the time are on discord now. Not because of me, but because of the network effect. I was merely an early adopter.

     Ok. I understand this. Now, you probably didn't intend to but, you just made me laugh (good laugh). If You have not convinced your Mom of the enlightened internet technology path then I do not hold out too much hope for the rest. You are truly an eternal optimist. That's a good thing! I know this whole process cannot be stopped. It will play out. I just hope I don't have to do a lot of instance jumping.

     @noondlyt@mstdn.social Sometimes it’s not a matter of trust but a matter of what they know. You and I have the confidence to go beyond walled gardens. Many people, not so much. My mom is like that. She’s on Facebook all day but she’s scared of “the Internet,” which she believes is full of hackers. She stays on Facebook not because she likes Zuckerberg but because people she knows are on there. And if people she knows are on Facebook, she’s okay with being there.

     My experience is only with the damage Meta has done to this country. If facebook is the only internet available then that is unfortunate. I do not disagree with giving people options.

     Why would people trust a new platform offered by Meta if they are wanting to get away from Meta?

     @noondlyt@mstdn.social Human beings also have families. And jobs. And support networks. So it’s not so easy as “move away”.
     
     In fact, I’ve been to places in the world—such as Southeast Asia—where Meta basically is the Internet. Most people there aren’t Nazis, they’re just folk trying to get by.
     
     Now there might be an opportunity to move them off of Meta, albeit slowly, and the way to do that is by allowing them to keep in touch with friends and family.

     @noondlyt@mstdn.social It’s almost as though you believe everyone who’s on Meta prefers it, and are not a part of a marginalized group. This is not the case.
     
     Nevertheless, as an admin, I can choose who I allow onto my server.

     It is the quality of the users who made a conscious decision to stay on a platform that has allowed the worst of humanity to run stomping all over marginalized groups and aggressively promote violence through extreme ideologies. Meta is very bad and so many of those who chose to stay did so because they were permitted to spew the ugliness all over. This problem is the sum of its parts.
