I wrote a story and asked Chat-GPT if it would appeal to women. And what does it do?

Chat-GPT instead tells me it could also appeal to men too. Then it goes on a big moralizing rant about how individual taste is more important gender identity.

    🙄

I mean, it’s not as though there isn’t whole publishing houses devoted to catering to women’s tastes in literature.

What is Harlequin, for god’s sakes?

Yes, I know Harlequin doesn’t appeal to all women. That’s obvious. We all know that.

But it’s their audience is almost entirely women.

Chat-GPT is like the world’s most annoying first year sociology student. It always wants to show off what it knows about society, though it has no life experience in the real world.

Except, even worse, it’s never existed in society and doesn’t know what it’s like.

@rushraptor@babka.social I get it, but the tool can be damn annoying at times.

@atomicpoet it's just a tool at the end of the day. Could still ask some weekend you know to beta your work 😊

@sphakos@toot.cat Just tried that. Wildly, the response was different. It didn't say that women might like it too. Nor did it give me the big long-winded lecture.

@atomicpoet What happens when you ask it if the story would appeal to men? I would be curious if there was a different response.

@niksu@mastodontti.fi @sphakos@toot.cat I disagree. On Twitter (back when I used it) I generally found that women love giving feedback on things -- particularly on whether or not something appeals to them.

In fact, in any product dev, it's silly not to ask for a woman's perspective.

The more diverse perspectives, the better.

@atomicpoet @sphakos you'd probably get a similar rant when asking that question on Twitter. Maybe ChatGPT gets its material from there.

A few people have said that the fact that students turning in papers written by ChatGPT also shows shortcomings with our educational system.

And it has nagged at me that undergrads are basically trained to write as if they have authority backed by experience, when of course they don't.
