@emilygorcenski I like some aspects of this, but I would be concerned about who would pay for self-hosting. If it were a foundation of some sort, their donors might still want a certain level of control over the content being hosted or else they would pull their funds.
I also think too that there are pro-social benefits to joining a community oriented instance (like how Babka is a Jewish oriented instance) .

@aral imagine if we treated IRL spaces like this. We'd have random techbros crashing on everyone's couches and saying "if you didn't want me here you would've locked your door."
