    @Infoseepage

    This just addresses domestic egg production, but if the virus that circulates in the wild is a form that can infect humans over distances then the implication is that anyone going out of a filtered environment will have to wear a mask (including eye coverage if ocular infection is possible). That's an extraordinary escalation of impact and we know huge numbers of Americans won't do that.

    Also, it means devastation of susceptible wild birds as well.

    @Infoseepage please reread and possibly edit your post. You have what I think is a very confusing instance of “now” where you meant “not”. The typo entirely changes the meaning.

    @forteller Breaking Away, an American film from 1979 is a fun, very bike-centric bit of culture.

    @Infoseepage I can't imagine most hospitals in the US can handle many patients requiring this level of intervention. They were running out of ventilators at the start of COVID and I'm sure there are even fewer of the heart lung bypass gadgets. And there are probably fewer hospitals and hospital beds than there were in 2020.

    @Infoseepage @aby Not for nothing, but if there is an H5N1 pandemic of any magnitude there will be significant capacity issues at labs, pharmacies, trucking companies, medical centers, etc. who would have to be on their A-game to vaccinate everyone. On top of this COVID showed us that we can count on a vocal minority of people (possibly including the Secretary if HHS) pumping the brakes (or stomping on them). Even if the country were 100% in favor and healthy it would be very iffy.

    I don't mean to sound flippant, but what if someone did shoot one of these down? Wouldn't that be the best way to solve this? They're not humans so "killing" them shouldn't be a problem. So long as its done over an area with limited chance of them landing on someone where's the downside. I sense there would be zero sympathy for whoever is doing this if their little toy is broken. Let the cops shoot one or two down. They have the firepower.

    @sky @johnlogic In all seriousness, my city just implemented cameras that catch drivers who pass school busses stopped with the lights flashing and STOP signs sticking out. A lot of drivers are being caught and serious people are complaining that it’s unfair on socio economic grounds to fine people since many are impoverished or from minority communities. Apparently just not passing stopped school busses isn’t an option people are willing to consider.

    @CloudyMrs you might try mountain biking or bikepacking shoes for something that will allow some walking. My sense is that flat pedals are gaining popularity and unless you are doing really competitive riding you won’t notice a difference.
