Any recommendations for cycling shoes, please? I have road ones but can't get on with them, so I'm looking for something I can get off and walk in without looking like a constipated penguin. Is it worth the effort? Does clipping in really make that much difference? I've tried to understand the different system but don't really get why road, mtb and touring are different or better. The ones in Decathlon I tried are all plastic tatt. Advice welcome. #BikeTooter

@magsforsythe6 I've worn merrell type walking shoes since I started cycling, but I keep feeling like the seeming majority who do clip in can't all be wrong. Is it just hobby boys pretending to be pros? Nae idea.

@CloudyMrs Mountain bike SPDs are walkable in. Got a set on my road and fat bikes. The cleat is within the sole not sticking out. I just went into my local bike shop and they had all the gear to set me up.
Makes a difference to me. Cycling with flat pedals feels weird and not as efficient. But then I'm old and had toe-clips and straps since a teenager.

@CloudyMrs When you're clipped in and fall off (I'm clumsiness personified) it hurts more.

My now ex-husband had shoes in 3 or 4 different colours with matching socks, helmets and gloves. Poser. I'm happy in trainers with stiff soles.

@VirginiaHolloway @CloudyMrs I think they've even proven that only a small percentage of top cyclists actually end out having a impact for being clipped in.

The only thing I ever found was they kept my legs in a good position as for some reason my right foot always ends up moving outwards, think I've got a dodgy hip as my right foot always points outwards. Otherwise a complete waste of time and money, just use flat pedals and ride more comfortably.

@CloudyMrs you might try mountain biking or bikepacking shoes for something that will allow some walking. My sense is that flat pedals are gaining popularity and unless you are doing really competitive riding you won’t notice a difference.

MTB shoes. Mine are comfy and good to walk in.

I know flat pedals are trendy again, but I'm not into it. I can do it, but it's not as comfortable. Yes, you have to make sure you get out of the clips when something happens, but I have more trouble falling off of flats and getting hurt when something happens.

But that depends, for commuting short distances, yeah, I'd go flats. For riding when the point is the ride, clipless.

I have heard of them bothering some people's knees though, pretty common. I think it's the amount of "float" different pedals have.

I've only used the Time ATACs for so many years I'm not sure about the others.

I ride off road and street, but I am by no means a "Road Biker". I ride a cobbled together old MTB on the street.

@CloudyMrs #BikeTooter #cycling #cyclinglife I have a pair of generic Shimano bike shoes that are SPD compatible, but I don’t use clips. I alternate between them and my Chaco sandles (Less sweaty than shoes). I ride gravel and roads in these interchangeably until it gets really cold (below freezing).

      Different people like different things.

When you're clipped in you don't have to think about keeping your feet on the pedals, you don't have to pedal the same way, stand the same way.
There's a lot going on with that that you don't notice until you can stop doing it.

It's like a seat belt for me. I've hit bumps and slipped off the pedals and crashed many times.

It's probably also that I've ridden so many years clipped in. There's a lot of unconscious things you do to stay on the flat pedals and I probably get sloppy about it.

@CloudyMrs The best option I've found were the one made by crankbrothers.
The cleats are shallower, and you can actually walk without having the cleat touching the ground.

The one reason I clip in is for my foot to always be located correctly. I tend to lift my feet from the pedal and having to think about it when I'm with flats.

Aside from the cleats, the pedals are more expensive than Shimano SPD, but they also have complete reseal kits (that include a replacement ball bearing).
My little experience with SPD (cheaper) is that you could replace the balls there as well, but if you didn't do it in time, the inner race would start to wear off and you might as well throw the pedal away.

I’m typically biking in sandels with wool socks once the temp get’s toward upper 40’s fahrenheit with no issues with my feet. It’s my hands that are the problem
