@CloudyMrs The best option I've found were the one made by crankbrothers.
The cleats are shallower, and you can actually walk without having the cleat touching the ground.
The one reason I clip in is for my foot to always be located correctly. I tend to lift my feet from the pedal and having to think about it when I'm with flats.
Aside from the cleats, the pedals are more expensive than Shimano SPD, but they also have complete reseal kits (that include a replacement ball bearing).
My little experience with SPD (cheaper) is that you could replace the balls there as well, but if you didn't do it in time, the inner race would start to wear off and you might as well throw the pedal away.
