I think people resist the idea of manufactured consent because it would force them to understand that many of their most deeply held beliefs are actually unhelpful things they've been *programmed* to believe by culture and media.

And most people cannot accept the idea that they are influencable, more-over, have already been influenced, and that propaganda continues to work on you even as you are aware and observing it happen to yourself.

One of the most frustrating things about our shitty gerontocracy is how much smarter younger people are yet I'm almost 40 and the same stupid old geezers still run everything that did when I was a teen! (And on the computer too much!)

It will certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out. I think your assessment of the camps is fairly accurate.

I guess I'd add that there are subsets of those groups whose specifics will probably drive a lot of these decisions though. Like the very vocal anti-search minority of the old guard, techie Twitter exiles like me who see value in protecting the fediverse and growing it, and the hustle-n-grind VCs who want to turn any online space into money for themselves.

That's not what I'm saying, can't speak for others. Fediblocks work. I'm not saying that every CHUDs homebrewed stalker-search is as good as a big centralized public search hub. A search tool for general use does need to respect privacy and requests for removing items, so that it doesnt become a tool for generalized harassment.

This is like the gun control debate. You *cannot* prevent all illegal guns, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't regulate them.

Probably should be reiterated any time these threads get too deep into the rabbit hole is that creeps and stalkers don't ask and don't respect any system of opting in or out. If they can see your posts, they can and will index them.

Any argument that relies on "what would a stalker do" is flawed. They won't do anything you expect of them, they don't ask.

Oy what a day #today is! After partying for Mardi Gras all weekend (up to yesterday I mean!) my house is a wreck and so am I! So I'm taking it easy, getting things organized and clean, putting costumes away, sipping tea and pedialyte (electrolytes! What plants crave!), and getting caught up on the work I missed!

I fucking knew it! As soon as I saw the announcement a few days ago, I was like "too easy, no way, where are the catches!" Sure enough, its a tactic to stave off further degrading of their monopoly by offering the least version of what was asked for, full of tricks to get them back in the seat as soon as the public looks away. There can be no compromise with monopolists: tear them apart and put the pieces into the public trust!
