Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 02-Jun-2023 01:00:09 JST Miah Johnson You know who really loves Kubernetes? Cloud vendors who sell access to turn-key clusters.
Remember when we had the knowledge, and ability to run our own infrastructure without clouds?
"AWS revenues in 2022 hit $80.1 billion"
"Google Cloud reports revenue of $6.86 billion, up from $4.99 billion in 2021."
"In a recent report from Microsoft, Azure generated a revenue of $75.3 billion in 2022."

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 28-Apr-2023 03:33:08 JST Miah Johnson @roadriverrail I love the idea of training, but I've never seen it happen in Ops. It's generally, ok the edict is this, and you either sink or swim. Learning a single language is already hard when you're OnCall and working all day. It's very hard to keep up and live a life. I've been able to expense something like Redhat / Cisco training and certification, but then getting work to approve time off to take the classes is another thing too. I don't understand how people are doing it.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 28-Apr-2023 00:42:21 JST Miah Johnson @roadriverrail It happened again when Go started gaining traction. Suddenly, everything was Go! Thats fine, I understand its a good language, but shit I worked there for 4 or 5 years and had to learn 2 programming languages to keep up. Its not tenable.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 28-Apr-2023 00:38:23 JST Miah Johnson @roadriverrail Ya, like I loved working at Simple. When I got hired, it was all for Ruby skills. But then there was a quick shift to Python which I didn't know as well and it 'affected my performance'. Suddenly, those who knew Python were getting so much done while I was languishing. Its a shitty experience. I picked it up eventually, learned enough to get by. But "we rewrote this over the weekend in Python behind closed doors" (eg, not on Slack but in private comms) sucked to wake up to on Mon.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 28-Apr-2023 00:14:05 JST Miah Johnson Went outside this morning to feed the flock. Saw a rooster lying in the driveway. Thats odd.. Then noticed feathers everywhere. Upon closer inspection it looks like a Racoon got him (he's headless).
Other hens feathers are sprawled about too, but all hens are accounted for and seem OK on first inspection.
He defended the flock. He did his job. He was a regal rooster. Queen Anne was his name.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Friday, 28-Apr-2023 00:08:23 JST Miah Johnson @roadriverrail Ya agreed. I've spent countless hours learning "Good Programming Techniques" only for them to be entirely ignored in every org. Writing tests? Eh, they are nice to have but not required. Clean code? LOL Comments? FUCK NO DUDE. Randomly picking a new language for _project_ because its the new hip thing on HackerNews? Fuck YES!
My ability to debug almost anything: More useful than any time I've spent learning more about programming.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 27-Apr-2023 23:34:23 JST Miah Johnson The key things to look for during tech interviews are curiosity, and the ability to learn. Having past experiences with the technology your working with is a bonus. Consider how often people in tech have to reinvent themselves as the tech landscape changes like seasons. Frameworks come and go faster than anybody can master them.
Kubernetes isn't even 10 years old at this point. The "DevOps" era was over in less. Configuration management was variable until it was mostly Ansible.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 27-Apr-2023 23:34:22 JST Miah Johnson Infrastructure is far too chaotic and big to construct any meaningful test. People can have years of experience with various UNIX systems beyond Linux. As long as they have the ability to learn they'll be fine with Linux. Oh no, this person doesn't have kubernetes experience.. but maybe they managed Sun hardware and have been doing hardware partitioning for decades.
Just because a person failed your test doesn't mean they won't work out.
This is why we interview.

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 27-Apr-2023 01:35:50 JST Miah Johnson @mattl I had that box set when it came out. I only played W40k a handful of times, but I painted SO MANY miniatures.
I got my first set of Orks at a garage sale in the 1990's, I had no idea what they were but they were cool and I enjoyed painting them. I brought them to my local hobby store and they helped me discover W40k!
Tons more fun than building the usual model. Loved White Dwarf too.
(I haven't seen any TT Gaming things at Yard Sales in MI since the 90's though)

Miah Johnson (miah@hachyderm.io)'s status on Monday, 20-Mar-2023 04:57:15 JST Miah Johnson I miss Ops work being generalized knowledge of UNIX and not specialized knowledge of some startup products that won't exist in 10 years.
