@artemis I would say this is a pretty good description, and what is most annoying (to me, as a neuroscientist) is that we could be looking into how actual intelligence works (in humans and other animals) and how to imitate it in computational models, but most of the funding that could be used for this is now being redirected towards generative "AI" instead.. well, hopefully this is just a phase..
The turning point for Amir was the Israeli strikes on fuel depots in Tehran last week, with one attack on the Shahran oil depot overshadowing the capital with black smoke. A rain shower later covered trees, homes and cars with layers of toxic oil. “I genuinely believe now they [the US and Israel] didn’t have a plan. I was still hoping I was wrong, but the Shahran attack changed the way I look at this war right now,” he said. “If the regime is what you want to hit, even if you think these depots were used by the regime, where do you draw the line? What about us, the ordinary Iranians? We rely on this civil infrastructure. Why take away our ability to govern in the future? Who can rebuild utter ruins?”
@thomasfuchs Hmm, maybe I under-interpreted what you meant by "fascist", I tried to apply it to people I know who I see slowly moving "further right" and starting to say racist or discriminatory things. They are family or friends and I would much rather change their mind than give up on them. I'm wondering if ostracising them would help... I guess they would maybe not be considered fascists, but who knows, they also seem to admire people like Trump so I wouldn't be that sure.
@blogdiva that's silly, it's like saying something written by a typewriter is not copyright-able because it was made by a machine.. The "AI" program was made by a human in the first place, it's just slightly more sophisticated..
@drahardja Hmmm.. not sure.. but this made me think more about it: say, the typewriter is actually changing the inputted letters a bit, for example it's changing some of the Ts into Ss and maybe the author notices it and likes the output, or not, but in any case they want to copyright the resulting book (with the "typos"). That would be valid, right?
Now, isn't the output of an LLM a combination of its inputs (prompt) and its internal machinery (transforming the inputs)? So why can't the output be copyrighted?
Edit: we should probably also consider the training set as part of the inputs, but I still don't think the output can't be copyrighted. However, who would benefit from the copyright is a good question, probably all the authors of the work that went into the training set + the person who wrote the code of the LLM + the person who wrote the prompt..
@artemis I guess one of the reasons for having biological children (conscious or not) is that you get to transmit your genes and in a way you become a little bit immortal... (I said, consciously or not!) So if you do all that, go through all the trouble and costs related to having children, and then those children "stop the chain" by not having children of their own.. You're not really immortal anymore.. and maybe you will start to resent them for it.
@rose_alibi Vivaldi is a great alternative to Firefox (it has a clear anti-AI stance), it's actually much faster and has cool features. Some people on here will not like it because a small % of their code is not open source. I personally don't care about that too much as long as the program does what I want it to do.
@inthehands right... So, if the guns can't be used for that, which if I remember well is the main reason why Americans seem to want to have guns, what's the point of having them?
@neuralreckoning oooh what's the 2nd article? 👀 (I know, that's not the point of your post but I'm already convinced that Nature Publishing Group sucks and that #eLife is better :) )
@RickiTarr I'll go against the crowd for this one and argue that homework can be a good way to consolidate learning that has happened in class, because our brain likes repetition and learns best when doing stuff on its own. It can also allow the detection of unclear points that might have seemed fine during class but once in a different context were actually misunderstood or forgotten.
So I think it is good to have (limited) homework, provided that students have access to a space where they can do the homework besides their home.
[voir ci-dessous pour la traduction fr] This feels like a time as good as any to share the (French) songs of my dad - Jacques Duvelle - who was a music teacher and a singer - musician - composer.
He released two albums with his group and also led a national event in France at the time of the war in #Bosnia (1994) where he somehow organized for 10 000 children of schools all across France, plus the world-famous singer Barbara Hendrix, to come to Paris and sing "the song of Sarajevo" against the war.
I noticed that you can upload mp3 files here, so I will share the songs in this thread... 🎵 ⤵️
Album: Musique d'un Film Song 1: Elle Est Née Au Nord
This song is about me 😊 I was just a baby at the time, and I think it explains why my parents chose my first name - has good musicality and many possible play on words!
I was just talking to @Fragglemuppet about it which is what pushed me to write this thread. I added the French lyrics and my English translation to it. I plan to do that for the upcoming songs when I get a chance!
