The next time you hear someone say “the Constitution will keep that from happening,” remember, the Constitution is not going to leap from its display case at the National Archives and fly to the rescue. *People* who want to uphold the Constitution will try to keep it from happening. So when you hear that, make sure to ask: “Which people? Do they have enough power to do so?”

Still waiting for some cis ally to speak up with a “have you no sense of decency?” moment to the people persecuting the trans community. It feels like it’s going to be a very long wait.

@ChrisWere My answer would be, which societies have the lowest proportion of hungry or homeless people? “Great artists steal.” Have an idea to reduce homelessness/hunger even less? Try it on a small scale; if it works, try scaling it up.

And yes, people will try to sabotage it for selfish reasons. Are there societies where that kind of sabotage is less common? If so, learn from them. Ideas for reducing that problem? Trial them and see if they help.

Since human minds and human societies are some of the most complex systems we know, predicting how they work from first principles isn’t currently possible (and may never be).

So I'm *deeply* skeptical of utopian plans for society. If you want to convince me we should change society in some way, point me at an example of a society that tried it and had it work out well.

What societies/practices currently give the best outcomes for people? We should learn from those.

@quinn @futurebird @VaylLarkinPoet Mastodon isn't a monolith. The Mastodon team wants to be welcoming to everyone. That's also what I, and many others here want. So the people who don't want that are the problem. We shouldn't let them pretend they speak for Mastodon as a whole.

I firmly believe that the key to acceptance for the trans community is representation. It’s harder to hate people when you see them as human beings.

@finestructure Also a completionist here, but I never go to bed without finishing. I have to use selective muting on some days—if there's an account I enjoy but missing a day wouldn't hurt, and I have a huge timeline to scroll through, I use "mute for 6 hours" to clear out the posts from that account. It helps a lot. Very occasionally, I have to be really brutal and do that to quite a few accounts.

Between the House and the Senate, it's pretty clear the Democrats aren't going to lift a finger to help the trans community during the coming regime. We're on our own.

I should point out that the number one way mainstream journalists say Democrats should win back disaffected Trump voters is by abandoning progressive values.

I am still seeing tons of articles in the mainstream media about how Democrats need to win back disaffected Trump voters. This is despite the data which clearly shows that Trump's vote did not increate significantly over 2020, but rather that Democratic voters voted in substantially smaller numbers.

I see no articles about how Democrats need to energize their base to vote, which is what the data indicates. The mainstream narrative is pure bullshit.

My scorecard so far in getting folks on Bluesky I want to follow to turn on the ActivityPub bridge: 2 did so, 9 didn't respond or I couldn’t find a way to contact them.

I really wish this bridge acted like "request follow" rather than requiring an explicit opt in. The bridge could ask someone on either side whether they want to accept/reject a single person at a time, open up follows completely, or opt out of bridging altogether and not be asked again.
