I shouldn't even have to be saying this. We all know Elon's rules are fake and yet we're following them. The more explicitly right wing that site becomes, the more it's incumbent on us to use any tools at our disposal to chip away at its power. We should be using guerilla tactics.
My operating premise is that if Elon hadn't shut down the API, a bunch of Twitter clients would have added Mastodon functionality, and a lot of people would have a foot in both worlds. I don't mean just passive cross posting either. And when you have a foot in both worlds, and see a lot of your social network with the same, it's a lot easier to remove your foot from one of them.
I don’t know how @MonaApp is pulling this off, but I’d love to be able to use my Twitter account credentials to follow individual Twitter accounts in Mona, and just have them in my timeline. Same for Bluesky and Threads accounts, and RSS feeds for that matter. One app, where Mastodon is your home base but you can follow anyone anywhere. https://mastodon.social/@MonaApp/111409045804641622
This speech from yesterday’s interfaith rally in Boston, by an Israeli-American rabbinical student, is one of the most powerful things I've heard in this whole war. https://spectra.video/w/6gEjLaDnVZdFmhyoNHwVh5
If you're in a progressive group that posts to X, volunteer to start accounts on Masto (and if you can stomach it, BlueSky and/or Threads), manually mirror the posts, and engage as needed. It's a little thing we can do to reduce the left's dependence on fascist fuel.
Trying this again since Mastodon was surprisingly helpful with my last Mac IT issue. Did a full (less apps) restore from Backblaze (I know better now). Everything seems ok, except when I download a zip & double click from Safari, Archive Utility gives the error “Could not find a writable folder for the contents of _.zip.” But I can open the zip in Downloads from the Finder and it decompresses. I have rw permission for Downloads, so the problem is elsewhere… but where?
@boris@kissane@jdp23 Wait - do we have a documented case of someone seeing a reply from her that wasn’t boosted by or sent to someone the person followed? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen here, with anyone…
@boris Huh. I am pretty sure that is the ostensible expected/intended behavior. I don't *think* I have ever seen a reply in my timeline to someone I don't follow, unless it was boosted or had a hashtag I subscribe to. I follow a lot of people, including a lot of people Erin talks to, so I see a lot of her replies but I assume I miss a lot too. Maybe your instance is doing something different?
@boris Not sure - just googled a bit, found some side references to it in github issues & convos on Mastodon and Reddit but nothing definitive. Seems like something @feditips might know about?
Ok this is wild - when I (iPhone) text mastodon links to my partner (Android) they suddenly don’t appear to be coming through. No error, she just doesn’t get them. Seems to be regardless of the instance.
@inthehands Analogies are something I would expect it to do really well at. That's literally 99% of what I ever see it doing. Also, I thought they removed those from the SAT a long time ago? (Made me sad because they were my favorite part.)
@rysiek@silverwizard I noticed this flip. At first it was the “AI skeptics” noting the failure to define intelligence, but suddenly I started hearing that more often as a talking point from the “AI believers”. So annoying!
The funniest thing about rich and/or exploitative people is when they try to convince you that something they want you to do is really in *your* interest, and their argument just insults your intelligence. But they think they’re being really slick!
@kissane@wynkenhimself This one time, thinking my housemate had baked cookies, I helped myself to a crumb of a home made bath bomb. That was something.
