Prediction: before too long, boasting that your consumer tech product is “powered by AI” will make as much marketing sense as touting your food product as “powered by GMOs”

@inthehands Definitely the first episode! But what I get from that show is slightly different - hope that even after the worst case scenarios I dread are ahead of us, humanity can sprout back up through the pavement.

@inthehands Whereas the two I mentioned feel like they capture this unreal feeling of the pandemic that never ended, things continuing on like they're normal even though everyone is dazed from a collective trauma.

It's wild how The Leftovers S1 and Mr Robot S2 are both about the 2020s despite being written by people who had never heard of Covid.

It's well understood that to make the most of a place like this, without juiced up algorithms, you have to follow a lot of people. But I think another thing is that you have to keep following new people because there is a lot of churn. A lot of people have faded out but there are always cool new people to discover.

Is it even possible to have an organization like Mozilla or Automattic that won’t let us all down?

@molly0xfff @thomasfuchs Honestly I think it's bluesky that goes after the users more, mastodon tends to direct its fear and loathing at the owners. (and poor snarfed)

@snarfed.org @tchambers Holy moly "moderate people, not code" is so good. So many ideas I've wanted to express but you had the skill and knowledge to express them so much better than I'd have been able to!

@mekkaokereke @georgeeyong God I hope you’re right. And that “the end” you’re talking about comes some time before my own.

I kind of understood this, but it's getting clearer to me. The kind of people who build good thoughtful products are going to be disproportionately put off by AI and the surrounding culture, leaving the field largely to scammers and magical thinkers. And the ensuing flood of shit isn't neutral. Actual good stuff gets lost. I really think this kind of hype is bad for real innovation.

People like to say that "AI" is different from crypto in that there are actual useful applications, and that's true. But the vast majority of people you're expecting to come up with those applications are the same people who were just trying to build products on the blockchain.

Someone in a group chat shared some ChatGPT output, and it's fascinating to me that it has all the superficial hallmarks of clear writing, but the way my brain bounces off it, it might as well be the most convoluted, tedious academic writing you can imagine.

@Damon @blogdiva @polotek I don’t *think* Mastodon will immediately transform into the worst aspects of Bluesky overnight, with main characters of the day over silly shit and whatnot. And I do hope that it helps with Mastodon’s whiteness problem. I guess we’ll see (hopefully) soon enough.

@Damon @blogdiva @polotek I just go ahead and quote. My hope is that most people who follow me use apps that support it. My understanding is that official support is on the Mastodon roadmap. I’m pro-quote, and mostly don’t use it for dunking. That said! Bluesky strikes me as a case study supporting the claims of anti-quote people. I love a lot about that place, but it is undeniably dunk-happy, in a way that overall detracts from it, imho.

@otto42 @tchambers @arossp @funkwhale @Castopod I strongly disagree - I think discussion of podcasts is a huge and untapped need. Constantly want to talk about an episode after I hear it. This was slightly viable in the Twitter era, when it was just accepted that everyone was on there, and new episodes usually had an associated tweet. Extremely hard now.
