@natalie Yes, it’s half way there just being rss. Places like @Castopod create functionaly a single server that gives every new episode its own ActivityPub post and creates a unique ActivityPub account for each podcast.
@tchambers@indieweb.social do podcasts need to be fully on activitypub though? They're already just RSS feeds. Technically if someone is self-hosting their own podcast it's already kind of federated, right?
It would build in federated comments about each episode, help discovery across the Fediverse and lessen dependence on Apple, Spotify, Google or centralized podcast servers, and all the content interactions with fans all federate to all platforms. This social feed could even be built into popular mobile apps, thus moving the conversation cross app.
@tchambers@funkwhale@Castopod I'm not sure I understand what would make this different than just having the RSS feed. Just that there would be an object mastodon understands?
Having the ability to reply to somebody because they posted a thing on the fediverse is not the same thing as having a discussion about it with other people. You can argue that it gives a single place to have the discussion, but that may not be the creator's intentions or desires.
@otto42@tchambers@arossp@funkwhale@Castopod I strongly disagree - I think discussion of podcasts is a huge and untapped need. Constantly want to talk about an episode after I hear it. This was slightly viable in the Twitter era, when it was just accepted that everyone was on there, and new episodes usually had an associated tweet. Extremely hard now.
@tchambers@arossp@funkwhale@Castopod That is actually kind of an argument against them, because podcasts are very much a media broadcast type of environment, not one inviting comment, necessarily.
Federation makes sense in a lot of discussion kind of systems, but a broadcast sort of mechanism that does not accept or desire comments doesn't really make sense in this environment. And I don't know a lot of podcast readers/listeners that have a built-in comment/feedback system for the podcast.
@tchambers I am experimenting with @wikipediapodden It is a self-hosted WordPress with ActivityPub activated. I haven't figured out how to get the audio file into the actual toots yet.
