They are not having some dude with a M249 shooting at it from the deck, the automated systems are launching a standard at a few million each or running rolling frame/ciws that has limited ammo. You only have so many launch cells on a DDG and when its done its back to port because the navy scrapped out all of the replenishment ships years ago.
