Mastodon v4.6.0 requires Ruby v3.3, but my version of Ubuntu (24.04) only has 3.2.3. Anyone have a good suggestion? Otherwise I guess I'll just wait a while.

Maybe it's the pervasiveness of the good food options there. It's not like the USA doesn't have ANY good food, but there is a lot of crap, too.
But then again, Americans have a long history of terrible food that somehow doesn't go away despite the availability of better fare.

Also, thanks for your posts about southeast Asian food. It's sparked a desire to travel there one day. I may never get to go, but I can dream 😀

To be fair, McDonald's is often upsetting anywhere.

Have you told them that McDonald's doesn't even have curry sauce in many parts of the world?

Mastodon now has a "suggested follows" feature. If you were recently placed on that list, you'll see a wave of follow requests.

I think it's worthwhile to maintain hope that change is possible. After all, change often happens slowly, then all at once. If and when the current oligarchy becomes unsustainable, change becomes inevitable. -

I suggest that something else should be an industry movement to force the US government to enforce anti-competition laws against Google. And Meta. And Apple. -

That sign is nearly enough reason to learn how to play the bassoon.

Mandarin is the dominant language in China, right? The one I'm most likely to hear on Chinese television? -

Likely means that the article was not given a publish date. The Unix epoch begins Jan 1, 1970, so if the web server can't find a date or finds an invalid date, it might show Dec 31, 1969.

Thanks. I'm in Missouri at the moment, and I head to Texas tomorrow. But I work for a huge company and we definitely have quite a few trucks in the New England area.

I got a notice on my work tablet that said basically every highway in the northeast is closed to commercial traffic. This is huge.

Language is, as they say, descriptive not prescriptive. At this point, that spelling is used so ubiquitously that we should presume it is correct. But, you know, don't you dare use the word "less" to describe a count of discreet objects. The proper term is "fewer." I will die on this hill. 😜

Why don't they change the sign to say "Dust storms may NOT exist?" Seems like that would solve the problem.

Yeah, that part is offensive, but expected. It was the glorification of AI that did it for me. They claim to have used Claude to set up the instance, including purchasing the domain name.

In collaboration with the NYT, or at least some of their podcasters. My hopes for the sporkiverse are abysmal. I will be happy to be wrong.
