    Biryani is one of my all time fave foods. I tend to prefer the southern styles which isn’t easily available outside of south India.

    Which is why Kolapasi’s Vijayawada style biryani really hits the spot for me.

    Other faves in the Bay Area: Dindigul Thalappakatti (Milpitas), Appakadai (Sunnyvale and Dublin)

      I find many of the northern styles of biryani to be very good technically, but also 1/10th the flavor in terms of spices. If I’m not feeling the warmth of a ton of pepper and cloves riding through my biryani while I eat it, I’m most likely not wanting to eat it

      @skinnylatte I wonder what’s the difference between Hyderabadi and southern style. Hyderabadi biryani tastes off to me cause we are accustomed to Lucknowi style, which is less spicy

      @farah well Tamil style biryani has that much spice and then a spicy curry to eat it with as well so I really like that

      @skinnylatte Girl, if you want that much spice in your biryani, you want curry not biryani!! To us, in Bangladesh, biryani is by default is a less spicier dish than traditional curries and such. Btw have you ever had Tehari? Traditionally cooked with mustard oil, it has a zing that’s unbelievably delicious

      @farah I’ve been 5 times since 2004

      Dhaka each time of course and last time I was in Dhaka I met some photographers who had been involved in documenting the horrific garment factory thing. They had a photography school

      I was also in Chittagong and Sirajgunj and a few other places like that

      @jaym I’ve been to Chennai every year since 2004? Except the last 6

      Maybe sometimes 4 times a year to Chennai, sometimes it was 5 days, sometimes it was 5 weeks, sometimes 3 months, so I guess if you add up all of it, quite a lot

      I also drove a rickshaw around it https://rickrollshaw.tumblr.com

      @farah I went there to do an internship of some sort with Grameen, way back, but it was mostly taking photos and writing case studies for them. The professor who changed my life in college in Singapore was from Bangladesh (an economist at the Asian Development Bank). Many of my friends were from Dhaka originally, so it never felt that foreign to me. I listen to Hemanto Mukhopadhay and think of ‘the good old days’ :)
