Welp - three different "everyday use cases" for AI came up over lunch today; one was utterly useless & the other two were solved far better with a proper search engine & a fucking pocket calculator.

Meanwhile, two different tech profiles in my extended circles, both with a considerable audience & one of them doing a 360 from their previous position, came out as vocally anti-AI today, on Linkedin no less.

The fart noise from the deflating bubble is getting louder.

BTW this latest development means that every remotely honest SEO agency is going out of business & the rest will go from pretending they know more about how Google works than they do to outright lying about why their customers should still spend money on them...

Bad intent aside, I think a lot of people intuitively think 10% is a small error rate, because the things we do often enough for 1 error in 10 to compound become routine & we overlook them.

The irony is that we can do that precisely because those things have FAR lower error rates. If your coffee maker exploded several times a week you'd fucking notice.

Just another way digital tech gets a pass we'd never afford anything else.

The fundamental fallacy is that a translator translates words. They do not. Translation translates meaning.

Which computers not only don't understand - we have no idea how to make them even if we had magical technology, because we don't know how humans do this in the first place.

@dalias It's sad as a former GP'er & still supporter (on balance I still think they do more good than harm) to have to agree with this - but we often discussed it while I was there & I still talk about it with the friends I made at the time; the tendency to take up purist positions that poison our own well & helps our adversaries...

I'd like to comment on the common "AI is just a tool" thing: I'm a woodworker by training & that means a lot of machines - but almost every craftsperson knows how to do their job with hand tools, or "lesser" machines.

Similarly, a writer can write without a text editor - just as well, only slower.

If loss of a tool = loss of your skill & knowledge, then that tool isn't an asset, it's a liability. You're signing over your ability to do business to whoever sells & maintains that tool.

@aral @randahl Also, the other main demographic I see appealing for mutual aid are trans and/or neurodivergent and/or cronically ill people who are either actively marginalized where they live & therefore cut off from "regular" aid sources, or have fallen through some sort of crack, also cutting them off from other, more readily available forms of support.

In many such cases, just asking for aid requires more courage than you or I will ever know.

Like Aral says, context matters.
