Again. And again. And again.

please can we add a "right-click" anywhere in the post body and "open in new tab" to the web UI
other similar platforms have it and it makes life a lot easier when reviewing several threads
also the tiny time indicator eg "3m" is too small to be such a link, and it also doesn't make sense for time to be a permalink
One on the reports on Al Jazeera last night was saying that parents have started to write the names of their children on their hands, arms, legs - again.
That is so messed up.
Imagine writing the names of your own children on their limbs so their body parts have some hope of being identified.
I need some #lisp help.
I'm stuck on a recursion exercise - have been for 2 days!
We're given a at a structure a list of lists, where each such list is of the form (person mother father) .. and so a lot of these together create a family tree.
I want to write a function lineage x y which returns a list of ancestors from x to y ... eg x, mother of x, father of prev, y .... or NIL if y is not an ancestor of x.
I found this easy in #prolog (I wrote this https://prologbyexample.blogspot.com/2023/02/introducing-recursion.html ) but not #lisp.
I'm forcing myself to work through a course on #economics.
It's painful. But I'm doing it to better understand their terminology and how they think.
It's very painful. Establishment* economics is a cynical ideology, not a science, not even an art.
( * non-establishment economics exists eg zero-growth economics)
Example 3 - individual selfish behavior is at the very core of progress. So who's going through build roads, water pipes, schools? The ideology totally negates the idea that humans might want to do something because it is good or beautiful or nerdy. A huge amount of scientific discoveries happened like this, not for profit seeking.
Example 4 - they frame the public sector as a tax on the rest of us. Wtf? Who invested in the research that made possible his smartphone? The public sector.
Example 1 - the senior academic economist who wrote the course says there is a debate about climate change caused by industry. That there is a "probability" it is real. And insurance is the best way to deal with its impacts, if any.
Example 2 - they think of poor people as being trapped if they get a welfare safety net. So take it away. Make sure there are "incentives" (threats) to work. This is ao simplistic that it isn't serious - it can only be a prejudice dressed up in academic framing.
I am really disappointed that #opensource organisations like @pycon and @NumFOCUS have remained silent on this.
They position themselves as being diverse, inclusive, and supporting good things for everyone all over the globe - and they do generally live up to that aim.
But on this their silence is loud.
And that silence is not neutrality.
And imho, it is privilege that allows them to remain silent, to look the other way.
"never again !"
"but not for you"
So is EVAL the way to do metaprogramming in #lisp ?
I've just come across EVAL in the beginners course I'm doing. But they say we won't be using it in this course.
thanks - I did get a login but there are no videos
I hope it isn't an 'app only' thing
Thanks
Is this your opinion or is what the team have said officially is the barrier?
I have two questions about Loops.
1. what's the remaining barrier to it being #opensource as promised ?
2. why can't I find its website to upload videos and see others' videos?
Im no expert but I'm led to believe rust is a significantly different paradigm but also massively hard work.
Might as well use that enthusiasm and energy to design a new kind of kernel rather than Frankenstein the existing kernel which follows a 30 year old design...
I wonder if there's an effort to create a unix-like kernel entirely in rust?
it is IRRESPONSIBLE that they still allow it to be downloaded without HUGE warnings
am I the only one who thinks this?
this was from episode 2 :

episode 1 is also interesting:

documentary on AJ making clear that
1. para-state organisations create malware that can attack your phone, and compromise even your encrypted comms
2. it is "normal" people being targeted - lawyers, NGOs, journalists, activists,. .
why do I mention this?
because
1. people are talking about #signal as if it were a complete a solution - it isn't
2. it is not just very few people who are targeted, as suggested by "threat model" discussions
Remember when years ago people said
"they're doing this to Palestinians, and if you don't speak out they'll do it here".
