I haven't officially given up on it, but I was so bored that I stopped after four episodes.
And of course, as it's an American show dealing with my country, I'm not sure if some of the things are bad writing or have an in-universe explanation (like Daryl arriving in France in Marseille from the US, then walking more than 500 km without encountering a human soul and very few walkers) Things like that.

I admit, the Rick and Michonne one is okay so far, but the fact that this CRM nonsense is a big part of the story makes me think it's going to crash sooner than leter.

@liztai@hachyderm.io I don't know that much about the Chinese diaspora (except that it exists and roughly where it's located) but I find it interesting how the feeling of being Chinese is still so strong.

I guess I can't help comparing with Europe where usually you're "from" where you were born after two generations or so.

I have a Spanish or Catalan last name (I'm not even sure), a Flemish grandma and I'm also partly German (from the 19th Century), but I don't feel that any of those are part of my culture or identity. I'm a SouthWestern French because this is where I grew up, basically, and despite only one of my four grandparents being from there.

And that's pretty much the same for all Europeans I know (after two or three generations, your "roots" become irrelevant)

That's why I always facepalm when White Americans tell me that they're French or Italian or whatever because they know of one ancestor that's from there ("No, sorry, you're American.")

But it is different with the Chinese diaspora because, as you mentioned, you all still have a lot of customs and cultural practices coming from China.

When I lived in Paris, I knew one guy who was French from Vietnam but from the Chinese diaspora if that makes sense. When you asked him about his cultural identity, he just shrugged.

My parents' neighbor (basically my third grandma, I was closer to her than to one real grandma) was from Vietnam too, and she had one Chinese grandparent. When you asked her about her identity, she said French citizen of Vietnamese culture. She never felt Chinese.

I've just been accused of missing the "nuance" of what's happening in Gaza.

Can anyone explain to me the nuance of killing tens of thousands of people, most of them children?

@tchambers@indieweb.social won me over with his handling of the situation with the opt-in opt-out silliness. We need more admins like him who know what they're talking about.

I have a few ideas, but I'm sure I'll be overthinking them for the next few days. We'll see.

@scott@authorship.studio This was my feeling when the Threads freakout happened last summer and it has been confirmed since yesterday.

A lot of Mastodon users don't understand the first thing about the Fediverse and federation.

And it's concerning when some of those people are Mastodon admins.

Yes, this is a terrible move in so many ways. Especially #PixelFed of all platforms. All users of #Threads are #Instagram users. All of 100 million or so of them. And instead of showing them that there is another way, PixelFed is shutting the door on their face!

I have yet to see a worse way to promote the #Fediverse and the #OpenWeb.

I just can't understand this decision.

When a random instance is preemptively blocking Threads, they're only hurting themselves, but a flagship instance?
They think they're "fighting" Meta, but all they're doing is hurting their users and hurting Threads users, who are our friends and families, the people we want to bring over to the Fediverse.

Just when I was starting to love PixelFed and wanted to start promoting it more, I'm seriously reconsidering now, and will probably leave the thing altogether. What's the point of even changing instance when the flagship and the developers are acting against the Fediverse.

This is really upsetting.

Yes, yes. I fully understand. Meta's path to world dominance goes through crushing the Fediverse. Meta and its three billion users (and you're probably already one of them, and I'm not even talking about the ghost accounts here) have one hurdle left for world dominance. It's a group of geeks and nerds, all two or three million of us. Is it a case of not understanding what a billion is again?
