"But you don't understand! If #Threads federate with the #Fediverse, evil #Meta will siphon all of our data."
I assume that by "data" you mean all of our collective public posts that have been crawled by hundreds if not thousands of robots already, including Meta's, right?
"But you don't understand! Meta is evil, it wants to take control of the world and all that. Also, embrace extend extinguish... Don't you know about embrace extend extinguish? I learned the expression last Spring, now I need to use it to pretend I know what I'm talking about. Look, I'm doing it again: embrace extend extinguish!!!"
Yes, yes. I fully understand. Meta's path to world dominance goes through crushing the Fediverse. Meta and its three billion users (and you're probably already one of them, and I'm not even talking about the ghost accounts here) have one hurdle left for world dominance. It's a group of geeks and nerds, all two or three million of us. Is it a case of not understanding what a billion is again?
@DavidBHimself well...you might be right, however...I have already seen the example of "embrace...extinguish" in the business world a couple of times, so I wouldn't be surprised here. Destroy the oposition, you know ... Because Meta or X or Google don't care about the people already desperately hooked up...they are concerned about those who are not. Remember the original Matrix movie? And in the course of history it was not the masses who steered the course...it was the small group of determined individuals. All aspiring leaders should be - and I bet they are - well learned about that. And yes, I do have a FB/IG account, for when I want to see their content. #mytwocents#threads#meta#Fediverse
@DavidBHimself@tchambers They’ve been forced into adopting open standards as a condition of staying in business in Europe. So long as that includes their building a migration off-ramp to the wider Fediverse (which if they don’t build themselves watch for an OSS project that uses Threads + Masto APIs to do it for them!) I think we’ll all come out alright.
