I, in my turn, invite you to consider the nature of geopolitics and commerce. For all these milquetoast embargoes we have placed upon Russia, their economy is firing on all cylinders. Those embargoes are a pitiful sop: as with Iran (and with their connivance may I add), Russia has worked around them al, especially oil - and the West has done nothing.

My grandparents were missionaries in Yunnafu area, up the Salween River. My mother's first languages were Lisu and putonghua. Several of their children were born in Burma. Loing story: most of my mother's friends died in Japanese concentration camps.

I believe culture is bound up in language, its words and phrases worth preserving in living people, not just books.

Unity is a worthy goal, but so, too, is diversity. These languages need saving.

When I was a little guy, my parents taught me to read very early. My first year of school was second grade. I was given a tour of the school library, an astonishing sight - so many books!

The librarian told me something I never forgot: "You don't need to know everything - just ask a librarian and they'll help you find what you want to know."
